US and China Agree on Trade Deal Framework Ahead of Trump-Xi Meeting

The United States and China have agreed on a framework for a potential trade deal, which will be discussed further when President Donald Trump meets Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. This agreement signals a step forward in easing tensions between the two economic giants.

Key Points of the Trade Deal

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the deal’s key points. These include a resolution regarding TikTok’s US operations and a delay on China’s tightened controls over rare earth minerals. Additionally, Bessent stated that the 100% tariff on Chinese goods, previously threatened by Trump, will not be implemented. China will also resume buying large quantities of US soybeans, offering relief to American farmers impacted by the trade war.

“The tariffs will be averted,” Bessent said, highlighting the positive shift in negotiations.

Trump and Xi Prepare for High-Stakes Talks

Trump and Xi will meet on Thursday in South Korea during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. Both sides have described the ongoing talks as “constructive,” and there are hopes the meeting will finalize details of the trade deal.

A Chinese government statement confirmed that both teams had reached a “basic consensus” and would continue working on the deal’s specifics. The agreement could help de-escalate the trade war and ease global supply chain disruptions.

Trump’s Tariff Tactics and Their Impact

Since taking office, President Trump has used tariffs as a tool to pressure trading partners, particularly China, to make concessions. The aim was to address trade imbalances and encourage the return of US manufacturing jobs. While this strategy has led to deals with several countries, China remains the central focus of the tariff war.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened a 100% tariff on Chinese goods, particularly in response to China’s restrictions on rare earth elements. These minerals are essential for producing electronics like smartphones and solar panels. Bessent revealed that China had agreed to delay these restrictions for a year, giving US manufacturers some breathing room.

Soybean Imports and TikTok’s Future

Another important issue has been the soybean trade. China halted its soybean imports from the US, hurting American farmers. However, Bessent suggested that China will soon lift the ban, offering hope for US farmers. “I believe our soybean farmers will feel really good about the deal,” he said.

Meanwhile, the future of TikTok’s US operations has been a point of contention due to national security concerns. Bessent confirmed that a deal had been reached on TikTok, with Trump and Xi expected to finalize it during their meeting. This deal will likely place control of TikTok’s US operations in American hands, with the algorithm managed by US companies.

US Expands Trade Deals in Southeast Asia

In addition to the China trade deal, Trump has used his tour of Asia to strengthen US ties with Southeast Asian nations. The US has signed agreements with Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, focusing on critical minerals like rare earth elements, which will reduce the US’s dependence on China.

Trump also secured significant trade deals, including a $8 billion Boeing jet deal with Vietnam and agreements for the US to supply agricultural goods. These agreements reflect a broader strategy to expand US influence in the region and counter China’s growing economic power.

Looking Ahead: What Comes Next?

As the US and China continue to work through their trade issues, the framework agreement offers a potential path forward. Trump and Xi’s upcoming talks could be pivotal in determining the future of US-China relations and shaping the global economic landscape.
