Four Winners Stand Out After 2026 Daytona 500 Qualifying

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Qualifying for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500 delivered more than just a starting order — it produced four distinct winners in a night full of speed and strategy at Daytona International Speedway.

Veteran driver Kyle Busch topped the time charts to secure the coveted pole position for Sunday’s Great American Race, while Chase Briscoe locked in beside him on the front row. Behind the front-row duel, two non-chartered drivers — Corey Heim of 23XI Racing and Justin Allgaier of JR Motorsports — posted the fastest times among those trying to make the field.

Busch Finally Hits Daytona Pole

Busch’s performance was the headline of the evening. The Richard Childress Racing driver delivered the quickest lap of the singles qualifying session, earning his first Daytona 500 pole after more than two decades chasing the sport’s most elusive hardware. The 40-year-old veteran has led more laps at Daytona than nearly any other driver who has yet to win the iconic race, and this pole gives him momentum heading into the week.

“I think I’ve finished in every position possible here,” Busch said after qualifying, acknowledging both the challenge and prestige of the event. “It would be nice to close out 2026 with a victory here in the Daytona 500.”

Briscoe, in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, held the second-fastest time, ensuring a strong starting spot for the defending runner-up in last season’s cup standings.

Open Cars Make Their Mark

In addition to Busch and Briscoe, Noah Gragson’s qualifying time was disallowed for violating a new aerodynamic rule — a reminder of the tighter technical regulations this season. Gragson had attempted to use his hand outside the driver’s window opening during his run, which NASCAR explicitly banned for 2026 qualifying.

Meanwhile, both Heim and Allgaier delivered breakout laps to secure “Open” spots in Sunday’s field. Unlike chartered teams guaranteed entry, open teams must earn passage on speed — and both succeeded convincingly.

Heim, a rising star in the Cup ranks, clocked a lap swift enough not only to qualify but also to position himself among the fastest in the overall session. Allgaier’s effort for JR Motorsports, co-owned by NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr., also stood out and adds intrigue to his upcoming performance in the Daytona Duels and the 500 itself.

Duels and Headlines Ahead

With positions secured for Busch, Briscoe, Heim and Allgaier, the remainder of the field will be set during Thursday night’s America 250 Duels, two qualifying races that finalize the starting lineup for Sunday’s Daytona 500. The Duels are a staple of Daytona Speedweeks and blend high stakes with unpredictable racing that often foreshadows what’s to come.

The qualifying results not only shape the grid but also spotlight the evolving dynamics of NASCAR’s season opener — from rule changes to underdog performances — setting an engaging tone as the Cup Series opens its championship chase.
