Bengals Dominate Ravens in Joe Burrow’s Strong Return, Cincinnati Defense Shines

By Jeff Zrebiec, Paul Dehner Jr., and Amos Morale III

Joe Burrow made a triumphant return to the field on Thanksgiving, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a dominant 32-14 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Burrow, playing his first game since Week 2 due to a toe injury, wasted no time in proving his worth, passing for 261 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Despite his strong performance, the Bengals faced early struggles in the red zone, where they went 0-for-4 in the first half. However, Burrow and the offense found their rhythm after halftime, turning a narrow 12-7 lead into a convincing victory. Cincinnati’s defense also made a massive impact, forcing five turnovers to complement their quarterback’s efforts.

Burrow’s Commanding Performance

Burrow’s first half was a testament to his resilience, as he threw 32 passes — the second-highest total of his career in a first half — and kept the Bengals in contention despite the red-zone woes. The Bengals’ kicker, Evan McPherson, kept them on top with four field goals, but the offense struggled to finish drives with touchdowns.

It wasn’t until the third quarter that Burrow fully showcased his returning prowess. On a 10-play, 61-yard drive, Burrow connected with tight end Tanner Hudson for a 14-yard touchdown. Later in the quarter, he found wide receiver Andrei Iosivas for another touchdown, extending the Bengals’ lead to 26-14. The Bengals offense, energized by Burrow’s presence, scored 17 points on their first three possessions of the second half, effectively sealing the win.

Cincinnati’s Defense Stands Tall

While much of the focus was on Burrow’s return, it was the Bengals’ defense that truly shifted the momentum. Coming into the game with one of the NFL’s worst turnover differentials, Cincinnati managed to force five turnovers, including three from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The Bengals’ young defense showed significant growth, with several standout plays. Safety Jordan Battle made an impressive hustle play to strip tight end Isaiah Likely at the goal line, preventing a touchdown. Defensive end Joseph Ossai contributed two sacks, one of which was a critical strip-sack. Additionally, rookie cornerback Demetrius Knight Jr. secured an interception, and Myles Murphy was disruptive all game long. The Bengals’ defense had not allowed fewer than 26 points since their season opener, but Thursday’s performance marked a clear turning point.

What’s Next for the Bengals?

With the win, the Bengals improved to 4-8 on the season, though their playoff hopes remain slim. While Cincinnati is two games behind the Ravens and still needs help to climb back into contention, Burrow’s return has injected new life into the team. The Bengals’ playoff path will depend on divisional results, including upcoming games against the Ravens and Browns. While the odds are against them, as long as Burrow is playing at a high level, the Bengals can still dream of an improbable postseason run.

Ravens’ Offense Crumbles, Lamar Jackson Struggles

On the other side of the field, the Ravens’ offense is facing growing concerns. After a strong start to the season, Baltimore’s offense has regressed in recent weeks. Jackson, who had been inconsistent in previous games, struggled mightily against the Bengals’ defense. The Ravens’ offense was unable to generate any momentum after their opening drive, going six consecutive possessions without scoring a point.

Jackson, who has shown flashes of brilliance this season, threw three costly turnovers in the game, including two fumbles deep in his own territory. He also missed several open receivers, further highlighting the Ravens’ offensive struggles. The running game, which had been a key strength for Baltimore, was also ineffective, and the offensive line’s struggles continued. This performance is a stark contrast to the five-game winning streak the Ravens had earlier in the season.

Ravens’ Playoff Hopes Hanging by a Thread

Despite their early-season struggles, the Ravens had recently rebounded to tie for first place in the AFC North. However, Thursday’s loss to a division rival has thrown a wrench in their playoff aspirations. With the Bengals’ win, the Ravens now find themselves needing to win their next two divisional matchups against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati in order to stay in playoff contention. A loss in either of these games would likely eliminate them from the postseason race.

While there’s still a glimmer of hope, the Ravens’ margin for error has now evaporated. The team must quickly regroup to address its offensive inefficiencies, or their playoff hopes will be dashed.
