Zelensky’s Updated Peace Plan Proposes Demilitarised Zones for Ukraine’s Eastern Donbas
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has unveiled a new 20-point peace plan to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia. The proposal, developed with US negotiators in Florida, includes a potential withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from eastern regions under Russian pressure, but with key security guarantees.

The plan suggests creating demilitarised zones in Ukraine’s contested Donbas region, which could include a “free economic zone” under Ukrainian control, not Russian forces. Zelensky emphasized that any such withdrawal would require a similar pullback from Russian troops to ensure no further escalation.
Key aspects of the plan also include security guarantees from the US, NATO, and Europe, ensuring Ukraine’s protection in the event of future Russian aggression. The proposal also reaffirms Ukraine’s sovereignty, including the possibility of joining the European Union, and calls for a referendum to decide on any territorial or economic changes.

Zelensky’s framework also addresses Russia’s occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, suggesting Ukraine’s control over the facility. While the Russian response remains unclear, Zelensky remains firm that Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security are non-negotiable.
