US Citizens on Stolen Florida Boat Killed in Deadly Clash With Cuba’s Coast Guard

A deadly confrontation between Cuban authorities and the occupants of a stolen Florida vessel has left four people dead and six others injured, according to U.S. officials, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Havana.

The 24-foot boat at the center of the incident was reported stolen from the Florida Keys and carried American citizens when it approached Cuban waters earlier this week. Cuban officials say the occupants opened fire on the island nation’s coast guard, prompting officers to return fire in what became a fatal exchange.

The incident is now under investigation by both U.S. and Florida authorities, while diplomatic channels between the two countries have been activated amid renewed scrutiny of relations.

A Violent Encounter at Sea

Cuban authorities contend that the vessel approached the island in a hostile manner and that individuals aboard fired first. The coast guard responded with force, resulting in multiple casualties. Four people were killed in the exchange, and six others sustained injuries.

U.S. officials confirmed that at least one of those killed was an American citizen. Another U.S. citizen is among the injured and is currently receiving medical care in Cuba.

The identities of those involved have not been publicly released.

The U.S. government has formally requested access to the injured survivors, according to officials familiar with the matter. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and is seeking additional information from Cuban authorities.

A Stolen Boat From the Florida Keys

The vessel involved in the clash had been reported stolen from Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is investigating the theft.

According to a sheriff’s office report, the boat’s owner contacted authorities late Wednesday after receiving calls from reporters inquiring about the vessel. He told investigators he believed an employee assisting with a tile renovation project may have taken the boat without permission.

The suspect allegedly left his truck near the dock where the vessel had been moored before it disappeared.

The report also notes that the man suspected of taking the boat has family in Cuba, including two young daughters who remain on the island. Investigators are examining whether that connection may have played a role in the boat’s journey south.

Criminal Histories and Immigration Status

U.S. officials say some of the individuals aboard the vessel have criminal records, though further details have not been disclosed. At least one person onboard held a current U.S. K-1 visa — a non-immigrant visa that allows a foreign national to enter the United States to marry a U.S. citizen.

Others are believed to be lawful permanent residents of the United States.

Authorities have not clarified whether the group intended to travel to Cuba permanently, retrieve family members, or conduct another operation. The presence of firearms and the exchange of gunfire have raised further questions about the purpose of the voyage.

Rising Tensions Between Washington and Havana

The shooting comes at a delicate moment in U.S.-Cuba relations. The Trump administration has renewed pressure on Cuba’s communist government, tightening sanctions and increasing diplomatic scrutiny over human rights and migration issues.

While maritime incidents between the two nations are rare, the latest clash risks inflaming already strained ties.

U.S. officials have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that they are working to gather verified accounts from both Cuban authorities and the survivors.

Florida state and local agencies are also examining how the vessel was taken and whether any additional individuals may have assisted in its departure.

Unanswered Questions

Key aspects of the episode remain unclear. Investigators are seeking to determine:

  • Why the group traveled toward Cuban waters.
  • Whether the vessel’s occupants intended to return to the United States.
  • What led to the reported exchange of gunfire.
  • Whether the stolen boat was part of a broader operation.

Cuban officials maintain that their coast guard acted in self-defense. U.S. authorities have not publicly disputed that claim but say they are conducting an independent review.

The deadly encounter underscores the volatility of maritime crossings between Florida and Cuba, a route historically associated with migration attempts and political tensions.

For now, diplomatic engagement appears to be focused on securing access to the injured Americans and clarifying the chain of events that turned a stolen pleasure craft into the center of an international incident.

As investigations unfold on both sides of the Florida Straits, the shooting has left families awaiting answers — and renewed scrutiny over the fragile relationship between two neighboring nations separated by just 90 miles of water.
