Massachusetts Links Brown University Shooting to MIT Professor’s Death

Massachusetts law enforcement officials have formally confirmed a connection between the tragic mass shooting at Brown University and the fatal shooting of an MIT professor, officials said Thursday during a press briefing held by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

According to authorities, 48-year-old Claudio Manuel Neves Valente is believed to be responsible for both attacks. Investigators say Valente carried out the mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday, then two days later fatally shot Massachusetts Institute of Technology physics professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

At the press conference, federal and local officials outlined how evidence and investigative leads linked the two incidents. The Brown University attack killed several students and injured others inside a classroom building, while Loureiro — a respected physicist and fusion scientist — was found shot at his residence and later died at a local hospital.

Authorities confirmed that Valente was found dead in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The discovery came after an extensive multi-agency search that followed surveillance clues and public tips.

Law enforcement officials stressed that while the suspect is now deceased, the motive behind the shootings remains under investigation. Despite the confirmed connection, authorities have not released a detailed explanation as to why the attacks occurred or whether the professor was specifically targeted.

The press briefing underscored the collaborative effort among federal, state and local agencies to piece together evidence and share updates with the public as the broader inquiry continues
