Diego Lopes Has “No Excuses” After UFC 325 Loss, Sends Respect to Volkanovski

SYDNEY — Brazilian featherweight contender Diego Lopes publicly acknowledged his defeat and offered respect to champion Alexander Volkanovski after a unanimous decision loss in the UFC 325 main event on Sunday night.

Lopes (27–8 MMA, 6–3 UFC) took to social media shortly after the fight to thank Volkanovski, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “No excuses, you’re ‘The Great’ @alexvolkanovski for a reason, thanks for the fight.”

The rematch from their April 2025 encounter saw Volkanovski successfully defend the UFC featherweight title in convincing fashion at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, with all three judges scoring the bout in the champion’s favor.

The Australian star, competing in front of a supportive hometown crowd, demonstrated superior footwork, striking precision and octagon control from the opening bell. Volkanovski’s performance extended his legacy as one of the division’s most dominant champions.

For Lopes, the loss marks his second straight defeat to “The Great,” and he appeared to take the result in stride. In his post-fight message, Lopes refrained from making excuses, instead showing class toward his opponent and appreciating the opportunity to headline one of the UFC’s marquee events.

Injury and Immediate Aftermath

Following the bout, Lopes was seen limping as he exited the octagon. His manager later shared that Lopeslikely suffered fractures in both feet during the fight, an injury that required immediate hospital evaluation. “Looks like we broke both feet,” his manager wrote in an Instagram Story, underscoring the physical toll the five-round battle took on the Brazilian.

Despite the setback, Lopes remained in good spirits, reflective of his resilience and mental fortitude even in defeat.

What’s Next for Both Fighters?

Volkanovski, who improved his championship resume with this victory, suggested that he is already considering his next opponent, with contenders such as Movsar Evloev and Lerone Murphy thought to be front-of-mind for upcoming title fights.

Meanwhile, Lopes’ future remains less certain. The Brazilian contender has firmly positioned himself near the top of the featherweight ranks, but a clear path back to title contention may depend on recovery from his injuries and adjustments to his game plan.

For now, his measured and respectful response after a high-profile loss has drawn praise from fans and analysts alike — a reminder that in elite sport, character often matters as much as courage.
