US Envoys to Meet Putin in Moscow
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — acting on behalf of US President Donald Trump — are heading to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks aimed at finalizing a US-backed peace plan intended to end the war in Ukraine.
The White House described the move as part of a renewed diplomatic push, signalling optimism about the prospects of reaching a deal.
Revised Peace Plan — But Kyiv Remains Wary
The journey to Moscow follows a week of intense negotiations in Geneva, Florida, and Paris — where US and Ukrainian officials worked to refine an earlier 28-point proposal.
The initial draft, widely condemned as overly favorable to Russia, reportedly included major territorial concessions by Ukraine, limitations on its military capacity, and restrictions on its path to NATO.
Although the plan has since been revised with input from Kyiv and its European partners, many details remain undisclosed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that preserving Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains the “biggest challenge” in negotiations.
Kremlin Stance — A “Basis for Future Agreements” Amid Warnings
From Moscow, Kremlin officials say the revised US proposals could serve as a “basis for future agreements.”
At the same time, President Putin has warned that if Ukraine rejects the accord, Russian forces may press ahead with further military advances.
Diplomatic Balancing Act — US, Europe, and Ukraine
Washington and Kyiv have emphasised the need for a sustainable and just peace — not merely a ceasefire. At talks in Geneva, US and Ukrainian officials described the updated framework as a working draft.
Meanwhile, European leaders remain cautious. Some warn that a rushed deal could pressure Kyiv into concessions that undermine Ukraine’s long-term sovereignty and security
