Crypto’s Retail Traders Hit Hard as Strategy ETFs Plunge 80%

Retail investors who once saw Michael Saylor’s Bitcoin-backed experiment as a golden ticket to crypto riches are now facing a harsh reality. Strategy Inc., the company that attracted millions of dollars from individual investors by offering Bitcoin exposure through publicly traded stocks, is grappling with a dramatic downturn in its market value. Shares of Strategy have plummeted more than 60% from their recent highs, triggering widespread concern among investors.

The plunge is part of a larger market meltdown that has seen digital currencies, led by Bitcoin, tumble in value. On Monday, Strategy Inc. announced a $1.4 billion reserve to fund dividend and interest payments, hoping to alleviate fears that it might be forced to liquidate its Bitcoin holdings to meet its obligations. However, for many retail investors, the damage has already been done.
Leverage and Volatility Take a Toll
The most popular exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track Strategy Inc.’s volatile stock — MSTX and MSTU — have both seen catastrophic losses this year. These funds, which use leverage to double the daily returns, have dropped more than 80%, making them some of the worst-performing ETFs in the U.S. market. As of December 2025, they rank just behind niche bets against gold miners and semiconductor stocks, far below the broader market average.
Since launching in the height of the crypto boom, these funds have seen a combined $1.5 billion in assets evaporate. A third leveraged ETF, MSTP, launched during the height of the 2025 crypto mania, has followed a similar trajectory, losing a staggering amount since its introduction earlier this year.

What began as an easy way for retail investors to amplify their bets on Bitcoin has morphed into a cautionary tale. Strategy Inc.’s stock, which once soared alongside the price of Bitcoin, has fallen 34% in just the month of November. Meanwhile, Bitcoin itself has seen a 30% drop from its October highs, now trading at approximately $87,000.
The Dangers of Leveraged ETFs
As the value of Bitcoin continues to fluctuate, the losses for leveraged ETFs like MSTX and MSTU have been particularly severe. These ETFs magnify both gains and losses, so when Bitcoin prices are on the decline, investors face a double hit.
“The recent pullback in Bitcoin has hit Strategy’s stock hard, and 2x leveraged plays like MSTX and MSTU turn that into even larger losses,” said Roxanna Islam, Head of Sector and Industry Research at ETF shop TMX VettaFi. “It’s a reminder that leveraged single-stock ETFs can look great on the way up, but can erase gains very quickly when the underlying trade goes the other way.”
For retail investors, the draw of high-leverage, high-risk ETFs was the potential for massive profits in a bull market. However, the sudden collapse in crypto prices has shown just how quickly fortunes can reverse.
A Valuation Crisis at Strategy Inc.
At the heart of the concerns is Strategy Inc.’s valuation metric, known as mNAV (market net asset value), which compares the company’s enterprise value to its Bitcoin holdings. This ratio, which had previously been seen as a strong indicator of the company’s financial health, has fallen dramatically, now hovering around 1.15. Executives have pointed to this as a warning sign, as the ratio’s decline signals that the company’s Bitcoin holdings no longer provide the cushion they once did.

CEO Phong Le recently discussed the company’s struggles on a podcast, stating that if the ratio were to slip below 1.0, Strategy Inc. might be forced to liquidate its Bitcoin assets to meet its obligations. While Le emphasized that this would be a last resort, the possibility of such a move has triggered panic among investors, who fear further losses in a market that has already shown signs of deep volatility.
What Lies Ahead for Retail Traders?
The turmoil surrounding Strategy Inc. and its associated ETFs serves as a stark reminder of the risks that come with investing in high-leverage products, especially in the volatile world of cryptocurrencies. For many retail investors who entered the market during the crypto boom, this moment marks a painful realization that gains can evaporate just as quickly as they were made.
As the market continues to grapple with the fallout from this crisis, Strategy Inc. faces a difficult path forward. Whether the company can stabilize its financial position, protect its Bitcoin assets, and restore investor confidence remains to be seen. For retail traders, this may be a sobering lesson in the importance of risk management, particularly in the high-stakes world of crypto-linked investments.
