: Trump Labels Democratic Veterans’ Call to Refuse “Illegal Orders” as “Seditious Behavior
President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack Thursday against six Democratic lawmakers — all of whom have served in the military or intelligence community — after they posted a video urging U.S. military and intelligence personnel to “refuse illegal orders.”
In a post on his social media platform, Trump branded their remarks as “seditious behavior” and asserted that such conduct was “punishable by DEATH.” He went further, calling on authorities to arrest them and put them on trial, calling them “traitors.”
What the Lawmakers Said
The 90-second video, shared originally on Senator Elissa Slotkin’s account, features her alongside Senator Mark Kelly, and Representatives Jason Crow, Maggie Goodlander, Chris Deluzio, and Chrissy Houlahan. Speaking directly to service members, they express concern that national security institutions are being used in ways that undermine the Constitution. They emphasize that service members have a duty to disobey orders that clearly violate the law, reminding them: “You can refuse illegal orders … you must refuse illegal orders.”
They close with a reference to an old naval rallying cry: “Don’t give up the ship.”
Trump reacted forcefully. In one post, he wrote: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS! LOCK THEM UP???” In another, more starkly: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” He also reshared comments from others calling for the lawmakers to be hanged.
When pressed at a White House briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Trump’s remarks as a response to what she characterized as dangerous behavior — “incitement to defy the chain of command,” she said, calling the lawmakers’ message a threat to military order.
Legal and Political Fallout
Democratic leaders swiftly condemned Trump’s rhetoric. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the president’s statements “an outright threat” and demanded immediate and unconditional condemnation from Congress, warning that such language risks inflaming political violence.
In response, the six lawmakers released a joint statement: as veterans and security professionals, they affirmed their commitment to constitutional duty. “No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation,” they said.
Legal Complexity
Legal analysts caution that while the lawmakers’ video urges disobedience of “illegal orders,” it does not identify specific orders or cite concrete cases.
PolitiFact
Under U.S. military law (the Uniform Code of Military Justice), service members do have a legal duty to disobey orders that are patently unlawful — but determining that is often fraught, and consequences for disobedience can be severe if orders are later judged lawful.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon denied that there is any systemic issuance of unlawful orders, affirming that all chain-of-command orders under the current administration are legal.
Why This Matters
The confrontation highlights deepening tensions in U.S. politics — not just between parties, but around the role of the military, the nature of lawful command, and how public officials frame dissent. Trump’s use of capital-punishment language against sitting lawmakers breaks with longstanding norms of political discourse, prompting serious concern from opponents and legal experts about the risks of escalating political violence
