Police Identify 18-Year-Old in Tumbler Ridge School Shooting That Killed Eight

Police in British Columbia have identified 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar as the suspect in a shooting that left eight people dead and dozens injured in the small community of Tumbler Ridge.

Authorities said the suspect was found dead at the scene from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive remains under investigation.

The violence began at a nearby residence, where officers discovered the bodies of the suspect’s 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old step-brother. Police believe the shooting at the home occurred before the suspect went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

At the school, six people were killed, including a 39-year-old female educator and five students — three 12-year-old girls, one 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy. At least 25 others were injured, some seriously.

Emergency responders transported victims to area hospitals as the school was placed under lockdown. Families gathered anxiously at a nearby reunification center awaiting news.

By Wednesday evening, hundreds of residents assembled in Tumbler Ridge’s main square for a vigil, lighting candles and laying photographs of the victims beneath a tree.

“Schools should be safe,” vigil attendee Gigi Rejano said, as mourners stood in silence.

A separate gathering took place outside the British Columbia legislature in Victoria, where Speaker Raj Chouhan urged unity and compassion.

“We can only pray together, hold hands together and send our love to all those people,” he said.

Investigators continue to examine what led to the attack and how the suspect obtained the firearm. Police have asked the public to avoid speculation as the inquiry remains active.

In a town known for its quiet streets and close-knit community, the tragedy has left residents grappling with grief and searching for answers.
