Apple may be preparing one of the biggest upgrades to its smallest tablet. The new iPad mini is reportedly on track to launch by the end of October 2026, bringing an OLED display and several other changes that could make the compact tablet substantially more attractive.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to release a new iPad mini with an OLED display “by the end of October.” The report follows months of rumors surrounding the next-generation tablet and gives prospective buyers a much clearer launch window.

The expected update could be significant because the current iPad mini was introduced in October 2024 with Apple’s A17 Pro chip. While that model remains powerful and supports Apple Intelligence, its LCD display and relatively unchanged design are beginning to show their age compared with Apple’s latest devices.

The upcoming model, often referred to as the iPad mini 8, is expected to address several of those limitations. Here are the four biggest upgrades that could arrive with Apple’s next compact tablet.

New iPad Mini Could Finally Get an OLED Display

The biggest change expected for the new iPad mini is an OLED display.

The current iPad mini uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD panel. Apple officially lists the display as an IPS-based LED-backlit panel with a resolution of 2266 by 1488 pixels, 326 pixels per inch and a maximum brightness of 500 nits.

OLED would represent a major visual upgrade.

Unlike an LCD panel, an OLED display can control individual pixels. Pixels can effectively turn off when displaying black, producing much deeper blacks and significantly stronger contrast. OLED can also deliver richer colors and faster response times.

Apple has already moved the iPad Pro to OLED, making the iPad mini one of the remaining models using LCD technology. Reports have consistently pointed toward the mini becoming the next iPad to make the transition.

For everyday users, the difference could be particularly noticeable when watching movies, viewing photos or playing games in dark environments.

The OLED panel could also make the compact tablet feel more premium. However, buyers should not necessarily expect the exact same display technology used in the iPad Pro.

Previous reports have suggested that Apple could use a single-stack LTPS OLED panel for the iPad mini rather than the more advanced tandem OLED technology found in the iPad Pro. That could mean lower brightness and fewer premium display features, although the improvement over LCD would still be substantial.

There is also uncertainty surrounding refresh rate. Some reports have suggested that the new iPad mini could remain at 60Hz, while other rumors have raised the possibility of a higher refresh rate.

Therefore, OLED appears to be the safest display prediction, while ProMotion remains far less certain.

A Major Processor Upgrade Could Make the New iPad Mini Much Faster

The second major upgrade could come from inside the tablet.

The current iPad mini uses the A17 Pro chip. Apple introduced that model in October 2024, giving the small tablet enough performance for demanding apps, gaming and Apple Intelligence features.

The new iPad mini is expected to move to a much newer processor.

Reports have pointed to either the A19 Pro or a newer A20-class chip. MacRumors previously reported that Apple is considering a major processor upgrade, while code discovered during Apple’s software development has provided additional evidence that a next-generation chip is being prepared for the device.

An A19 Pro upgrade would give the iPad mini a considerable performance advantage over the A17 Pro model.

That could improve demanding games, video editing, photo processing and on-device artificial intelligence. It could also extend the useful life of the tablet, which matters for customers who typically keep an iPad for several years.

The exact processor remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.

If Apple launches the device around October as expected, the A19 Pro may be the more likely choice. However, if Apple’s schedule changes, a newer A20 Pro chip could become possible.

For now, buyers should treat the exact chip as a rumor rather than a confirmed specification.

New Speaker Technology Could Improve Water Resistance

The third upgrade may be less obvious but could have a major impact on the tablet’s physical design.

Apple is reportedly working on a more water-resistant iPad mini. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously reported that the company is exploring a new speaker system based on vibration technology.

Traditional tablet speakers require openings in the enclosure. Those openings can make it more difficult to protect a device from water and other environmental exposure.

A vibration-based system could allow Apple to reduce or eliminate conventional speaker openings.

If the technology works as reported, the result could be a cleaner exterior and better resistance to moisture.

This does not necessarily mean the new iPad mini will be fully waterproof. Apple has not announced an official water-resistance rating for the upcoming device, and the precise level of protection remains unknown.

Still, even improved resistance could be useful for people who carry the tablet frequently.

A compact iPad is often used while traveling, reading in bed, cooking, working in cafes or moving between different environments. Greater resistance to accidental spills could therefore make the mini more practical.

The New iPad Mini Could Be More Expensive

The fourth major change may not be an upgrade users want to hear about: the price.

The current iPad mini starts at $599 in the United States after Apple increased its price in June 2026. MacRumors currently lists the 128GB Wi-Fi model at that starting price.

The OLED display could push the price even higher.

OLED panels generally cost more to manufacture than conventional LCD panels. Apple is also reportedly adding a newer processor and potentially a redesigned speaker system with improved water resistance.

That combination could give Apple plenty of justification for another price increase.

Previous reporting has suggested that the next iPad mini could cost as much as $100 more than earlier pricing levels. However, there is no official confirmation of the final retail price for the upcoming model.

For buyers, that means the value calculation could become more complicated.

The current iPad mini remains a capable device. It has an A17 Pro processor, Apple Intelligence support, USB-C connectivity, Apple Pencil Pro support and an 8.3-inch display.

But if Apple delivers OLED, a newer processor and improved durability, the next model could represent a much more meaningful generational upgrade.

Why the October Launch Matters

The reported October launch window is important because Apple has not followed a predictable annual schedule for the iPad mini.

The current generation arrived in October 2024, meaning the next model would arrive roughly two years later. MacRumors currently describes the existing iPad mini as nearing the end of its product cycle and recommends that prospective buyers wait if they are interested in the upcoming OLED version.

Earlier reports had already pointed toward an October 2026 release. The latest report narrows that expectation further by saying Apple is targeting the end of October.

That could place the new tablet after Apple’s major September iPhone announcements.

In other words, Apple may use the fall product cycle to introduce its newest iPhone hardware first, followed by additional products later in the season.

The iPad mini could therefore become one of Apple’s most interesting products for the final months of 2026.

What the New iPad Mini Could Mean for Buyers

For anyone considering an iPad mini today, the upcoming model could be a reason to wait.

The current tablet is still a strong option for people who value portability. Its 8.3-inch form factor makes it considerably easier to hold than a larger iPad, while the A17 Pro processor gives it enough power for most everyday tasks.

However, the combination of OLED and a newer processor could make the next model much more future-proof.

The display alone could be enough to convince some customers to upgrade. OLED would bring the mini closer to Apple’s premium devices while potentially improving movie watching, gaming and creative work.

The processor upgrade could also matter for Apple Intelligence and future AI-powered features.

Meanwhile, improved water resistance and a new speaker system could make the physical design more durable and sophisticated.

The main downside is expected to be price.

If Apple raises the starting price again, the iPad mini could become a significantly more expensive proposition than the standard iPad. Apple’s entry-level iPad currently starts at $449, while the iPad Air starts at a higher price and offers a much larger screen.

That makes the mini a product aimed primarily at customers who specifically want a compact premium tablet.

Should You Buy the Current iPad Mini?

For most people who are not in a hurry, waiting may make more sense.

Apple’s current iPad mini is already more than capable for reading, web browsing, note-taking, gaming and general productivity. It also supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Intelligence.

However, buying just before a major refresh can be difficult to justify.

The reported new iPad mini could introduce four meaningful changes at once: OLED, a newer processor, redesigned speakers and improved water resistance.

That is a more substantial upgrade than a simple chip refresh.

If you need a small tablet immediately, the existing iPad mini remains a reasonable choice. But if your current device can last another few months, waiting until October could reveal whether Apple’s next model is worth the premium.

Apple Has Not Officially Confirmed the New iPad Mini

It is important to separate reports from official announcements.

Apple has not yet announced the next-generation iPad mini or confirmed an October launch date. The information currently available comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, supply-chain reports, software-code discoveries and other industry sources.

Some specifications may therefore change before launch.

The OLED display appears to be the strongest expectation. The processor, screen refresh rate, final screen size and pricing remain less certain.

Apple could also introduce additional features that have not yet appeared in reports.

For now, the October timeframe is best viewed as a reported target rather than a confirmed release date.

Bottom Line

The new iPad mini could become one of Apple’s most significant tablet upgrades in years.

The reported move from LCD to OLED is the headline change, but it may only be the beginning. A faster A19 Pro or newer chip, improved water resistance and a vibration-based speaker system could collectively transform the compact tablet.

The biggest question may ultimately be price.

If Apple keeps the increase reasonable, the new iPad mini could become an attractive choice for users who want flagship-level performance in a small form factor. If the OLED upgrade pushes the price substantially higher, customers may have to decide whether the premium display and added features justify the cost.

Either way, October is shaping up to be an important month for Apple’s smallest iPad.

Until Apple makes an official announcement, however, the exact specifications and pricing should be treated as rumors. For buyers who can wait, the safest move may be to hold off on purchasing the current model and see what Apple reveals later this fall.
