Trump Endorses Cuomo for NYC Mayor, Further Polarizing New York’s Political Landscape

As the clock ticks down to New York City’s pivotal mayoral election, former President Donald Trump made waves with a public endorsement of Andrew Cuomo, urging New Yorkers to vote for the former governor in what has become one of the most contentious races in the city’s history. Trump’s appeal, made on his Truth Social platform, marked his most forceful statement yet in the 2025 mayoral race, stirring controversy and intensifying the political stakes in a city already rife with tensions.

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job,” Trump wrote on Monday. He added that Cuomo “is capable of it,” contrasting the former governor’s experience with that of his Democratic rival, Zohran Mamdani, who Trump dismissed as unfit for the role.

The endorsement, while bolstering Cuomo’s Republican support, threatens to alienate Democratic voters who may now view the former governor’s candidacy through the lens of Trump’s backing. Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment—claims he has denied—has been attempting to rebuild his political reputation. But Trump’s backing could prove both a blessing and a curse, further complicating his path to victory in deep-blue New York City.

A Polarizing Election

The mayoral race in New York City has been dominated by sharp ideological divides, with Cuomo’s candidacy at odds with that of Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who has drawn significant attention for his anti-establishment rhetoric and his calls for systemic change. Mamdani, who upset Cuomo in the Democratic primary earlier this year, has positioned himself as a candidate who will stand up to powerful corporate and political interests in both New York and Washington.

Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo came with sharp words for Mamdani, whom he has repeatedly described as a “communist.” The former president’s critique of Mamdani has not been limited to the political sphere; Trump has also threatened to withhold federal funds from New York City if Mamdani wins, saying he would only allocate “the very minimum as required.”

Mamdani has seized on Trump’s remarks, using the opportunity to highlight the GOP’s disdain for his platform. “The MAGA movement’s embrace of Andrew Cuomo is reflective of Donald Trump’s understanding that this would be the best mayor for him,” Mamdani said, underscoring that Trump’s political calculus had more to do with his own interests than the welfare of New Yorkers.

The mayoral race is also complicated by the candidacy of Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, who remains a long shot but holds a position in the polls behind Mamdani and Cuomo. Trump, who has not been particularly supportive of Sliwa, took to social media to discourage voters from supporting the Republican. “A vote for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani,” Trump wrote. Though he has refrained from outright urging Sliwa to drop out, the message was clear: Trump sees Mamdani as a far greater threat than Cuomo.

Musk Joins the Trump Train

Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo has not been confined to the former president alone. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and a longtime Trump ally, also weighed in on the race, expressing his support for Cuomo. “Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter), further complicating the political landscape in New York City as Mamdani’s supporters reacted strongly to the growing support for Cuomo.

Cuomo’s mayoral run is seen by some as a political comeback, but others view it as a reflection of the former governor’s deep ties to New York’s political elite. While Trump has consistently criticized Cuomo in the past, his endorsement is indicative of a broader Republican effort to bolster the former governor’s standing, even if it comes at the expense of further alienating left-leaning voters.

A Divisive Race: Experience vs. Radical Change

Cuomo’s endorsement from Trump highlights the stark choice facing New Yorkers in this mayoral election: experience versus radical change. The former governor has positioned himself as a seasoned politician with a record of success, particularly in his dealings with Trump during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cuomo’s experience has been a central part of his campaign messaging, with the former governor emphasizing that Mamdani, despite his progressive ideals, lacks the political experience necessary to navigate the complexities of running a city as large and diverse as New York.

Mamdani has responded by criticizing Cuomo’s record, saying, “You will hear from Andrew Cuomo about his experience as if the issue is that we don’t know about it. The issue is that we have all experienced your experience.” For Mamdani and his supporters, Cuomo’s tenure as governor is seen as a series of missteps, culminating in his resignation amid scandal.

What’s at Stake for New York City?

As the mayoral election draws near, New Yorkers are left to grapple with the weight of their decision. While many may view Cuomo’s endorsement by Trump as a testament to his political savvy, others may see it as a reflection of the broader national political polarization that has come to define American elections. At the heart of the race is the question of what kind of leadership New Yorkers want: the familiar, often controversial figure of Andrew Cuomo, or the ambitious, if untested, Zohran Mamdani, who seeks to radically reshape the city’s political and economic structures.

The race’s outcome could have broader implications, not just for the city of New York, but for the trajectory of both the Republican and Democratic parties in the coming years. With national figures like Trump and Musk weighing in, the 2025 mayoral race is poised to be a political spectacle—one that will likely be watched closely across the nation.
