Thailand announced on Saturday that the United States has suspended negotiations to finalize a reciprocal trade framework, citing concerns over Thailand’s commitment to a ceasefire with Cambodia.

According to Thailand’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nikorndej Balankura, a letter from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) arrived late Friday confirming the suspension. The USTR indicated that discussions would resume only if Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to the joint ceasefire declaration with Cambodia. Investing.com+2The Straits Times+

The trade framework under discussion had sought a balance: Washington would maintain a 19% tariff on many Thai goods, while identifying specific categories where duties could potentially be reduced or eliminated. Tensions reignited recently when Thailand suspended its participation in the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, alleging that Cambodia violated the agreement by laying new landmines that injured Thai soldiers. Cambodia denies those claims. The Guardian

In response to the USTR’s letter, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump. According to the Thai government, Trump expressed understanding of Thailand’s position, emphasizing that trade negotiations should remain distinct from border security issues. The Straits Times+1

On his Facebook page after the call, Anutin reportedly requested that Washington reduce the 19% tariff on Thai exports. Trump, according to Anutin, said he would consider the request if Thailand expedited the removal of landmines along the Cambodian border. The Straits Times

For now, both sides must renegotiate and finalize the trade deal before signing — a step that cannot happen while the diplomatic dispute persists
