CDI-IDC Issues Strong Resolution Backing Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire, Condemns Fresh Violence

In a strong and urgent declaration, the Centrist Democrat International (CDI-IDC) has issued a resolution endorsing the peace agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand on October 26, 2025, following weeks of escalating border tensions. At the same time, the international organization has expressed deep concern over renewed violence that threatens to undermine the hard-won ceasefire. CDI-IDC’s resolution calls for immediate action from both governments, international bodies, and humanitarian agencies to preserve peace, uphold legal frameworks, and safeguard civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.

A Moment of Diplomacy Amid Rising Tensions

The resolution commended the breakthrough peace agreement achieved at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, which was brokered with strong international facilitation. The peace talks, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the two neighboring nations, were seen as a pivotal moment for regional stability.

“We, the member parties of the Centrist Democrat International, reaffirm our commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and the value of human dignity. We strongly support the peaceful settlement of disputes among nations,” the resolution states.

The agreement, signed on October 26, was praised as a testament to international diplomacy. CDI-IDC acknowledged the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, who played a crucial role in mediating the talks, as well as the support of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia and the global support provided by the People’s Republic of China. The successful resolution was seen as a major diplomatic victory, particularly in light of the violent clashes earlier in the summer that brought both nations to the brink of war.

Call for Immediate Action

Despite the diplomatic success, CDI-IDC remains deeply concerned by a series of violent incidents that have occurred since the signing of the ceasefire agreement. In particular, the organization condemned a newly reported attack in Banteay Meanchey Province, which occurred shortly after the ceasefire came into effect. CDI-IDC called this act a blatant violation of the peace agreement, decrying it as an “unprovoked attack” and a “cowardly” use of force.

“We vehemently condemn such acts of violence, which are not only a clear violation of the ceasefire but also a direct challenge to the efforts of both Cambodia and Thailand to bring peace to the region,” the statement read. The organization called on Thailand’s government and military to fully comply with international norms set out in the ASEAN and UN Charters, and to actively engage in a peaceful resolution of all remaining disputes.

The Fate of Captured Soldiers

A significant section of the resolution focused on the fate of 18 Cambodian soldiers, who were captured by the Thai army on July 29, 2025, days after the ceasefire agreement was signed. The CDI-IDC’s resolution called for their immediate and unconditional release, describing their capture as a violation of both international law and the ceasefire terms.

The resolution emphasized that the ongoing detention of these soldiers continues to be a source of tension and poses a risk to the peace process. “The 18 Cambodian soldiers must be released without delay, as their continued imprisonment only serves to deepen the mistrust between the two nations,” the resolution asserted.

Protecting Cultural Heritage

Another critical aspect of the CDI-IDC resolution was the call for global support to restore and protect UNESCO World Heritage sites and cultural landmarks that were severely damaged during the military clashes earlier this year. Heavy shelling and airstrikes have caused irreparable harm to historical sites, some of which are of significant cultural and spiritual value to both Cambodia and Thailand.

CDI-IDC demanded a thorough investigation into the destruction of cultural heritage and urged both governments to work with the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to ensure the restoration of these irreplaceable treasures. “The devastation of cultural landmarks cannot be ignored, and we call on all international partners to support efforts to repair and preserve these historic sites,” the statement said.

A Unified Call for International Cooperation

The CDI-IDC concluded its resolution by urging global political parties and international organizations to unite in advancing world peace and security. The statement called on member parties to take action by galvanizing their networks and leveraging diplomatic channels to ensure the successful implementation of the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire.

The resolution underscores that lasting peace can only be achieved through collective action, and stressed the need for continued international engagement to monitor the situation, provide humanitarian aid, and help rebuild the trust between both nations.

“We are determined to see peace prevail and will continue to work relentlessly toward a peaceful future for Cambodia, Thailand, and the entire Southeast Asian region,” the resolution concluded.

Closing Thoughts

As tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border persist, the Centrist Democrat International’s strong resolution serves as a call to action for the international community to remain vigilant in supporting peace and security in the region. While the October peace agreement represents a significant diplomatic achievement, the CDI-IDC’s unwavering commitment to both humanitarian aid and legal action underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the critical need for ongoing dialogue and cooperation.
