US Public Overwhelmingly Supports Active Global Role — Including Defence of Taiwan, New Poll Finds

A recent poll by the Ronald Reagan Institute finds that a clear majority of Americans believe the United States should remain actively engaged on the world stage — and that this includes defending Taiwan if it came under attack.

According to the survey, 64 percent of respondents — a record high in the Institute’s eight-year polling record — said the US should “be more engaged and take the lead in international affairs.” By contrast, only 33 percent preferred a more inward-looking approach.

Notably, support for military engagement on behalf of Taiwan is robust and rising. 77 percent of surveyed Americans said it would be important for the US military to defend Taiwan, while 60 percent said they would back committing US forces to Taiwan’s defense — up from 48 percent last year.

The survey also underscores how many Americans view global military strength as a cornerstone of peace: 87 percent say a powerful US military remains important, 71 percent believe global stability improves when the US is dominant, and 44 percent support having a military capable of defeating both China and Russia simultaneously.

The findings mark a significant gap between public sentiment and the more isolationist posture often associated with President Trump’s administration — a divergence that, analysts say, could complicate decision-making if tensions over Taiwan escalate US Public Overwhelmingly Supports Active Global Role — Including Defence of Taiwan, New Poll Finds
