Cambodia Urges Thailand to Release 18 Detained Soldiers After 130 Days of Captivity

Cambodia has again called on Thailand to release 18 Cambodian soldiers, who have been detained for more than 130 days. The government insists that Thailand must follow its commitments under the bilateral Peace Agreement and international law.

According to the agreement, Paragraph 5 clearly states that Thailand must “immediately release the 18 Cambodian soldiers.” However, Cambodia claims that this provision has not been respected, and the soldiers remain in captivity.

The Cambodian government is also urging Thailand to respect international humanitarian law, which guarantees the fair treatment and prompt release of captured soldiers. Cambodia argues that the soldiers should be allowed to return to their families without further delay.

“We call on Thailand to fulfill its commitments in good faith,” a government spokesperson said. “This isn’t just a diplomatic issue—it’s a matter of human rights.”

Unwavering Support for the Soldiers

Cambodia has made it clear that it will not abandon its soldiers. Both the Ministry of National Defense and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces have reaffirmed their commitment to securing the soldiers’ release using all available diplomatic and military channels.

“The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces will continue to fight for the safe return of our soldiers,” an official stated. “We will not rest until they are home.”

International Calls for Justice

The case has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations and foreign diplomats urging Thailand to comply with international law. Cambodia’s calls for the release of its soldiers have been supported by various global entities, all of whom emphasize the need for fair treatment and respect for the soldiers’ rights.

This incident has added to the long-standing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, which have been marked by territorial disputes. However, Cambodia remains focused on resolving the issue through peaceful diplomatic efforts.

Ongoing Diplomatic Negotiations

Despite the ongoing impasse, Cambodia continues to press for the soldiers’ release. The government has requested urgent talks with Thai officials to expedite the process and ensure that the matter is resolved as soon as possible.

The families of the detained soldiers have also been vocal in their calls for justice. Many have staged protests, urging Thailand to respect the terms of the bilateral agreement and release their loved ones.

As the 130-day mark passes, Cambodia’s calls for the soldiers’ release grow louder. The international community is watching, hoping for a swift and peaceful resolution that respects both international law and human rights.
