Cambodia’s Defence Ministry Issues Firm Response
The Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia, Maly Socheata, released a statement underscoring that Cambodia is exercising its legitimate right to self-defence amidst escalating hostile acts by Thai military forces. The Ministry described recent incursions as “illegal acts of aggression” targeting Cambodian sovereign territory.
According to the statement, Thai forces have employed heavy weaponry — including drones, fighter jets, tanks, and other armaments — in repeated attacks across multiple border provinces. The Ministry condemned these actions as violations of bilateral agreements and international law.
Despite the aggression, the Cambodian armed forces reportedly exercised restraint and have not retaliated, reaffirming their commitment to peace and adherence to the existing ceasefire terms and joint peace declarations.
The government also called on the international community to condemn Thailand’s actions. Simultaneously, Cambodia pledged to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and protect its citizens by all lawful means if further aggression occurs.
Context: What Led to the Statement
Tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border have risen sharply in recent weeks, with multiple reports of military clashes, heavy weapons usage, and cross-border incursions. The dispute touches on longstanding disagreements over border demarcation and control of contested areas.
The statement from Cambodia comes after what it describes as unprovoked and sustained aggression by Thai military units — a pattern that, according to the Cambodian government, threatens regional peace, violates international norms, and undermines bilateral agreements signed by both nations.
Cambodia’s Position: Principles and Calls for Peace
Cambodia emphasizes adherence to international law — including the United Nations Charter and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Charter — rejecting any actions that attempt to alter borders by force.
While affirming its sovereign right to self-defence as enshrined in Article 51 of the UN Charter, Cambodia underscores its preference for peaceful resolution and diplomacy.
The government calls on the international community, including ASEAN and the UN, to intervene and hold the aggressor accountable, calling for immediate withdrawal of Thai forces and a return to negotiations.
What This Means Going Forward
The statement signals that Cambodia is resolute in defending its territorial integrity — but also open to diplomacy and peaceful resolution. The coming days are likely to be crucial: if incursions continue, Cambodia may respond more assertively. On the other hand, calls for international mediation might intensify, especially as regional stability hangs in the balance.
