Tourism Cancellations Hit Siem Reap As Authorities Reassure Safety
In the wake of heightened tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border, Siem Reap authorities are assuring tourists that the city remains a safe destination despite recent military activity. On December 15, Thai F-16 fighter jets launched airstrikes near the Srei Snam district, close to the Cambodian border. This incident, which has escalated fears of spillover violence, has led to some cancellations by international travelers, particularly those with bookings for tours in Siem Reap. However, local officials and industry leaders are reassuring the public that the city and its iconic tourist spots, including Angkor Wat, remain unaffected by the conflict.
Local Authorities Reaffirm Safety of Siem Reap City
Siem Reap, the gateway to Cambodia’s ancient Angkor Archaeological Park, has remained largely unaffected by the recent escalation in violence. The airstrikes, which targeted the Oddar Meanchey province on the Thai border, have caused some disruption near the frontier, but authorities are quick to emphasize that the situation is contained to border areas.

“Siem Reap city is far from the conflict zone,” said Ly Vannak, a spokesperson for the Siem Reap government. “There is no reason for tourists to worry. The city and its attractions are safe, and we continue to see visitors coming to explore Angkor and other historical sites.” Despite the assurance, a handful of tour operators have reported cancellations from tourists who are wary of the ongoing unrest.
One anonymous tour guide leader shared their concerns: “Some of my clients have cancelled their trips, fearing safety risks. Though the situation is far from the city, the reports of bombings have understandably caused anxiety.”
Tourism Industry Leaders Urge Calm
Chhay Sivlin, president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), also weighed in on the issue, calling the cancellations “unfortunate but understandable” given the media coverage surrounding the Thai military operations. Sivlin stressed, however, that the Cambodian authorities are closely monitoring the situation and that Siem Reap remains under the protection of law enforcement.
“The concerns of those who have booked trips to Cambodia are natural,” she acknowledged. “However, those already in the country can see that life continues as usual. The government has ensured that tourists are safe, and we are confident in the city’s ability to provide a secure and welcoming environment for visitors.”
Despite the cancellations, the tourism sector is seeing positive signs, with Siem Reap still welcoming a steady flow of international visitors. According to Vannak, approximately 2,000 people have recently purchased tickets to visit the Angkor temples. “We are optimistic about the future,” he said, noting that Siem Reap’s tourism infrastructure remains intact and operational.
Broader Impact on Cambodian Tourism
Although Siem Reap has not experienced significant disruptions, the broader Cambodian tourism sector is closely watching the situation. With new international media attention on the country’s rapid development, including recent mentions by BBC Travel, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh remains a beacon for sustainable urban tourism. The city’s transformation, exemplified by developments like the Techo International Airport and eco-conscious initiatives, continues to attract global visitors.
Phnom Penh, which was recently named by BBC Travel as one of the top 20 travel destinations for 2026, is capitalizing on this momentum. The city’s vibrant new pedestrianized streets, featuring local crafts and food festivals, coupled with its burgeoning Gen Z-led cultural scene, promises an exciting future for Cambodia’s tourism sector.
The Road Ahead for Siem Reap
Looking ahead, the Cambodian government is focused on promoting stability and tourism in Siem Reap, emphasizing that any security concerns should not deter travelers from visiting the region. Siem Reap’s rich cultural heritage, particularly the ancient Angkor temples, continues to be a major draw for global tourists. The Cambodian authorities have made it clear that the country’s borders remain secure and that the safety of both local residents and tourists is a top priority.
For now, the tourism industry is taking a cautious yet optimistic approach, reassuring travelers that Siem Reap remains a safe and vibrant destination despite the temporary disruptions caused by events near the border. As tensions ease and the situation stabilizes, it is expected that international visitors will return to Siem Reap, drawn by its historical and cultural significance, as well as its commitment to safety and hospitality.
