Netflix Hits Back at Diddy’s Criticism of ‘Shameful’ Documentary

In the ongoing drama surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs, Netflix has vehemently defended its new four-part documentary on the hip-hop mogul, following scathing criticism from his camp. The documentary, titled Sean Combs: The Reckoning, produced by rapper-turned-producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, has sparked a war of words between the streaming giant and Combs’ representatives.

Combs’ spokesman has denounced the documentary as a “shameful hit piece,” alleging that the production relied on “stolen footage” and undermined the mogul’s legal rights. The documentary, which explores Combs’ controversial career, includes previously unseen footage filmed just days before his arrest on prostitution-related charges in July 2024.

Allegations of Stolen Footage and Invasion of Privacy

At the heart of the criticism is the use of private footage, including a phone conversation between Combs and his lawyer. In the footage, Combs is heard speaking about the need to “fight for my life,” days before his arrest. Another clip features a conversation between Combs and his son, Justin, where the mogul expresses his frustrations with the media’s portrayal of his legal troubles.

Combs’ spokesperson argues that the footage was never authorized for release, and claims it was “fundamentally unfair and illegal” for Netflix to air private recordings that were never meant for public consumption. “Mr. Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way,” the statement read. “For Netflix to misappropriate that work is a grave injustice.”

In response, Netflix has rejected these allegations, stating that all material was obtained legally and that the documentary was not intended as an act of retribution. “The claims being made about Sean Combs: The Reckoning are false,” a Netflix spokesperson said. “This is not a hit piece, and Curtis Jackson, while an executive producer, did not have creative control over the project.”

The Role of 50 Cent and Longstanding Rivalry

A key point of contention has been the involvement of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The two hip-hop moguls have had a long-running feud, with Jackson previously criticizing Combs in the media for years. Combs’ spokesperson labeled Jackson’s involvement in the documentary as a personal vendetta, claiming that Netflix’s decision to hand creative control to Jackson was “staggering.”

The rivalry between Jackson and Combs has been well-documented, with Jackson accusing Combs of unethical practices in the music industry. “If I didn’t say anything, you would interpret it as hip-hop being fine with his behaviors,” Jackson told ABC News’ Good Morning America. Jackson has publicly stated that he feels a moral obligation to speak out against Combs’ alleged actions, especially in light of the ongoing legal issues surrounding the mogul.

Legal and Personal Allegations in the Documentary

The Reckoning delves into some of the most contentious aspects of Combs’ life and career, including the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The documentary features explosive claims, including allegations from former gang member Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who states that Combs offered him $1 million to carry out the murder. These claims, however, have not been proven in court, and Combs has long denied any involvement in Shakur’s death.

In addition to the Shakur allegations, the documentary revisits accusations of violence and abuse made against Combs, including allegations from former girlfriend Cassie. While Combs has denied the abuse allegations, they have resurfaced in multiple lawsuits, some of which have ended in settlements.

The documentary also includes interviews with two jurors from Combs’ trial, where he was convicted on charges related to prostitution but acquitted of more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.

Netflix’s Defense: No Vendetta, Just a Story to Tell

While the documentary has raised eyebrows, Netflix has maintained that its intention was to provide an honest and unflinching look at Combs’ controversial life. Director Alexandria Stapleton, speaking on the project, emphasized that the footage was obtained legally and that the filmmakers went to great lengths to protect the identity of those who provided the material.

“This documentary is not about personal vendettas,” said Stapleton. “It’s about telling the story of one of the most powerful and influential figures in hip-hop, warts and all.”

Despite the criticisms, the documentary has garnered attention for its stark portrayal of Combs’ career and personal struggles, with Netflix promoting it as a “staggering examination” of his rise to power in the hip-hop world.

Combs’ Legal Battle Continues

At the time of writing, Combs is serving a 50-month prison sentence following his conviction on prostitution-related charges. His legal team has indicated that they intend to appeal the verdict, which could lead to further developments in the case. Combs has publicly maintained his innocence, especially in relation to the most serious allegations leveled against him.

As The Reckoning continues to make waves, both Netflix and Combs appear locked in a battle of narratives, with each side defending its own version of events. Whether or not the documentary will have a lasting impact on Combs’ public image remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the conflict between the hip-hop mogul and the streaming giant is far from over.
