Amazon Plans Up to 30,000 Corporate Job Cuts Amid Cost-Cutting Efforts

Amazon is set to eliminate up to 30,000 corporate positions, marking its largest layoff since 2022. The move aims to streamline operations and offset pandemic-era overhiring.

According to Reuters, the layoffs will commence on Tuesday and affect nearly 10% of Amazon’s 350,000 corporate employees. Impacted divisions may include Human Resources (PXT), operations, devices and services, and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Managers have been trained to communicate the changes to affected staff via email notifications.

CEO Andy Jassy has emphasized reducing corporate bureaucracy and increasing automation through AI, contributing to job losses. Some employees not complying with Amazon’s strict return-to-office mandate are being considered as having voluntarily resigned without severance.

Despite the cuts, Amazon plans to hire 250,000 seasonal workers for the holiday season, the same as in the prior two years. Company shares rose 1.2% ahead of its upcoming earnings report.
