United Airlines Expands Summer 2026 Routes With Nonstop Flights to Lesser-Known European Gems
NEWARK, NJ — United Airlines is betting big on travelers looking for unique, culturally rich European getaways. The carrier has announced an ambitious expansion of its international network for summer 2026, introducing nonstop flights from the U.S. to a series of lesser-known but increasingly popular destinations across Europe and beyond.
🇭🇷 New Routes to Europe’s Hidden Treasures

Starting April 30, 2026, United will launch a new route from its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Split, Croatia, adding to its existing service to Dubrovnik. The very next day, May 1, the airline will begin flying nonstop to Bari, Italy, a coastal city in the heart of Puglia, known for its Mediterranean charm and historic old town.
On May 22, United will begin a new direct route from Newark to Santiago de Compostela, a spiritual and cultural hub in northwestern Spain that marks the final stop of the legendary Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
“These routes reflect our strategy to connect U.S. travelers with Europe’s hidden gems—places they’ve dreamt of visiting but may have avoided due to long, complicated connections,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances.
🌍 Going Beyond Europe: New Flights to Asia and the Middle East
In addition to its European expansion, United plans to deepen its international footprint with new long-haul routes:
- May 21, 2026: Direct service from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Reykjavik, Iceland
- May 8, 2026: Newark to Glasgow, Scotland aboard a Boeing 737 Max 8
- September 2026: Year-round daily nonstop from Newark to Seoul, South Korea
United also plans to add a third daily flight to Tel Aviv, Israel, from Newark beginning March 28, 2026, enhancing connectivity to the Middle East.
💼 Competing for Premium Travelers
With these additions, United is not only expanding geographically but also strategically targeting premium leisure and business travelers. Many of the new flights will be operated with aircraft equipped with Polaris business class cabins, offering lie-flat seats, upscale dining, and lounge access.
The move is a direct challenge to rivals like Delta Air Lines, which recently unveiled its own summer 2026 routes, including nonstop flights to Malta and Sardinia, Italy.
Both airlines are intensifying efforts to lure high-spending customers with direct access to secondary European markets. These routes are often underserved but increasingly in demand among travelers seeking culturally rich, less commercialized destinations.
💳 Driving Loyalty Through Global Access
United executives have long emphasized the airline’s international breadth as a key driver of customer loyalty and travel rewards credit card engagement.
“Frequent flyers are increasingly looking for unique destinations with seamless access,” said Quayle. “Our growing international network gives them just that—plus the premium experience they expect.”
Destinations announced last year, including Nuuk, Greenland, remain part of the airline’s schedule for 2026, showing United’s commitment to niche markets.
🧳 What It Means for Travelers
United’s 2026 expansion offers more choices for travelers who want to skip major hubs like Paris or Rome in favor of authentic experiences in cities like Bari or Santiago de Compostela—without sacrificing comfort or convenience.
With competition heating up among U.S. carriers for the international premium traveler, summer 2026 is shaping up to be a milestone season in the skies.
