Tyrese Gibson Charged with Animal Cruelty After Dogs Kill Neighbor’s Pet in Atlanta
| October 4, 2025
Actor and musician Tyrese Gibson has been charged with animal cruelty after an incident involving his Cane Corso dogs resulted in the death of a neighbor’s pet in Atlanta last month.
The 44-year-old Fast & Furious star surrendered to police on Friday, following a Sept. 22 arrest warrant issued by Fulton County authorities. Gibson was booked and released the same day, according to jail records.
The case stems from an incident on the evening of September 18, when Gibson’s four Cane Corsos allegedly escaped and fatally attacked a 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Henry, owned by a resident in the neighborhood.

Security Footage, Police Reports Outline Grim Details
According to court documents and police reports, the small dog was let out briefly for a bathroom break around 10 p.m. Minutes later, the owner found Henry injured near the front door.
A subsequent veterinary examination described severe trauma, including broken ribs, puncture wounds, and internal bleeding. Henry succumbed to the injuries shortly after.
Surveillance footage from a nearby security camera reportedly shows Gibson’s four Cane Corsos running toward the property moments before the fatal encounter.
Previous Complaints and Warnings Cited
Fulton County authorities stated that the attack was not an isolated incident. Reports indicate Gibson’s dogs had been seen roaming the neighborhood on at least five previous occasions in recent months.
On September 7, Gibson reportedly received an official warning from police regarding his dogs’ behavior, along with a notice about needing a special permit due to the number of dogs he kept.
A local woman also called animal control the night of the attack, claiming she was unable to leave her house because the Cane Corsos were outside her door. Officers had to escort her to her vehicle for safety, the report added.

Gibson Acknowledges Dogs’ Role, Claims He Was Away
In a statement posted to Instagram, Gibson’s attorney Gabe Banks said the actor was not in Atlanta at the time of the attack but has accepted full responsibility.
“Tyrese accepts full responsibility for his dogs,” said Banks, noting that two of the dogs have been rehomed, while puppies from the same litter have been placed in safe and loving homes.
Gibson himself also addressed the matter on social media:
“After nearly 40 years of being a passionate dog lover, this incident has left me shocked, devastated, and heartbroken for the family affected,” Gibson wrote.
He emphasized that his dogs were never trained to attack, had been raised around children and smaller dogs, and had never shown aggression prior to this event.
A Breed With a Powerful Reputation
The dogs in question — Cane Corsos — are a large, powerful Italian breed originally used for guarding and protection.
According to the American Kennel Club, the breed is “assertive, confident, and a peerless protector,” but also requires early socialization and responsible handling.
“Responsible breeding and early socialization with people and other dogs is vital,” the AKC states in its breed description, acknowledging the breed’s strong instinct to guard.
Legal Proceedings and Future Unclear
As of now, it’s unclear whether criminal charges beyond animal cruelty will follow. Authorities are also investigating Gibson’s compliance with local pet ownership regulations, including possible violations related to the number of dogs kept and the containment requirements.
The ongoing investigation raises questions about celebrity pet ownership, community safety, and how municipalities enforce animal control laws when high-profile figures are involved.
For now, Tyrese Gibson faces a serious legal challenge — one that goes far beyond his film career and into an emotional, deeply personal situation that has resonated throughout his neighborhood and beyond.
