Samsung’s Third-Quarter Profit More Than Doubles on Strong AI Chip Demand

Samsung Electronics has delivered impressive third-quarter results, with operating profits more than doubling, far exceeding both company guidance and analyst expectations. The surge in earnings was primarily driven by the booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips, marking a sharp rebound from the previous quarter’s slump.

The South Korean tech giant reported a revenue of 86.1 trillion won (approximately $60.5 billion), surpassing forecasts of 85.93 trillion won. This represents an 8.85% increase from the same period last year. Operating profit also surged to 12.2 trillion won, a rise of 32.9% from Q3 2022 and a dramatic recovery from a challenging June quarter.

In early trading, Samsung’s shares jumped by nearly 4% in Asia, reflecting the market’s positive reaction to the results. The company’s strong earnings signal a broader recovery after a major slump in the semiconductor market earlier this year.

Chip Business Drives Record Earnings

Samsung’s Device Solutions division, which includes memory chips, semiconductor foundry services, and advanced chip designs, was the star performer this quarter. Chip revenue hit an all-time high of 33.1 trillion won, propelled by robust sales of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, a crucial component for AI applications. The division’s operating profit soared by 81%, reaching 7.0 trillion won.

The company’s memory business, in particular, saw a massive 19% quarter-on-quarter growth, benefiting from favorable pricing conditions and a booming demand for chips used in AI servers. Samsung’s memory division is now positioned to become even more critical to the growing AI sector, as demand for AI infrastructure continues to outpace industry supply.

A recent Counterpoint Research report confirmed that Samsung regained its position as the global leader in the memory market, overtaking SK Hynix in Q3, after a brief period of market share loss. Samsung’s success in meeting Nvidia’s stringent qualification tests for advanced HBM chips was seen as a key milestone in this recovery, further positioning the company as a competitive player in the AI chip market.

AI Chip Demand Fuels Long-Term Growth Prospects

Samsung executives have signaled that the demand for AI-related server hardware is expected to remain robust, with industry giants competing to secure critical infrastructure. As AI applications proliferate across industries, companies are investing heavily in AI data centers, creating a persistent need for memory chips.

“We expect data center companies to continue expanding their hardware investments due to the ongoing competition to secure AI infrastructure,” a Samsung executive said during the earnings call. The company’s AI-related server demand is already exceeding global supply, positioning Samsung for continued growth in the next several quarters.

Looking ahead to 2026, Samsung plans to ramp up the mass production of next-generation HBM4 chips, which will offer enhanced performance for the most advanced AI computing systems.

Smartphone Business Performs Well, Boosting Overall Profits

Beyond chips, Samsung’s mobile experience and network business also delivered positive results. The division, responsible for smartphones, tablets, wearables, and other devices, posted an operating profit of 3.6 trillion won, marking an 28% year-on-year increase.

Samsung credited strong sales of its flagship smartphones, including the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7, for the positive performance. This boost in smartphone sales helped offset the broader slowdown in consumer electronics, reflecting Samsung’s continued dominance in the premium smartphone segment.

The company forecasts that the rapid expansion of AI technology will create new opportunities for both its device and chip businesses, further strengthening its financial outlook for the remainder of the year.

The Road Ahead for Samsung Electronics

Samsung’s third-quarter performance highlights the company’s resilience and adaptability in the face of a rapidly changing technological landscape. As the global AI revolution continues to unfold, Samsung is poised to be a key player, capitalizing on its leadership in memory chip production and AI computing.

In the coming months, all eyes will be on how the company sustains this momentum, particularly as competitors like SK Hynix and Nvidia continue to challenge Samsung in the memory and AI chip markets.

Conclusion
Samsung’s third-quarter results reflect the company’s ability to bounce back from earlier setbacks and capitalize on the growing demand for AI infrastructure. With a strong foundation in memory chips and a well-rounded product lineup, Samsung appears well-positioned to continue thriving in the competitive tech landscape.
