Kohler Unveils $599 Smart Toilet Camera That Tracks Your Gut Health

October 20, 2025

Kohler, the American manufacturer known for its premium bathroom fixtures, has taken a bold step into health-tech innovation with the introduction of Dekoda — a smart camera that attaches to your toilet and provides real-time health analysis of your waste.

The $599 device, which is now available for pre-order, uses an onboard camera to capture images of the contents inside the toilet bowl. These images are then analyzed using AI-powered algorithms to offer insights into gut health, hydration levels, and can even flag potential issues such as the presence of blood.

According to a report from CNET, the Dekoda aims to bring preventive healthcare right into your bathroom routine.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Health Monitoring

The Dekoda isn’t just a fancy add-on. It’s part of a growing movement to integrate health diagnostics into everyday objects, making it easier for users to stay informed about their bodies without heading to a clinic.

In addition to its camera system, the Dekoda comes equipped with:

  • A rechargeable battery
  • USB connectivity
  • A fingerprint scanner to identify individual users and personalize data tracking

The device is designed to be user-friendly, but not cheap. In addition to the upfront $599 price tag, users must also subscribe to a monthly health analytics plan that ranges from $70 to $156, depending on the level of detail and analysis desired.

Addressing Privacy Concerns

Naturally, placing a camera inside your toilet bowl may raise eyebrows. But Kohler is making privacy a key talking point in its marketing materials. The company assures users that the Dekoda only captures images of what’s inside the bowl, not of the user.

In a statement, Kohler said:

“Dekoda’s sensors see down into your toilet and nowhere else.”

Additionally, all data is reportedly protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning that sensitive health information is shielded from unauthorized access.

Competition in the Smart Bathroom Space

Kohler is not alone in this niche market. Startups like Throne have also developed similar toilet-integrated cameras designed to help users understand their digestive health through visual and chemical waste analysis.

While the idea of photographing feces might sound unconventional, health experts are beginning to embrace the concept. Fecal matter can contain valuable biomarkers that reveal signs of inflammation, internal bleeding, dehydration, and diet-related imbalances.

When Will It Ship?

Dekoda is currently available for pre-order, with shipments scheduled to begin on October 21. Kohler has yet to confirm how many units are available in the first round of distribution or whether additional subscription services, like health reports or medical consultations, will be offered in the future.

The Bottom Line

With the Dekoda, Kohler is betting on a future where your bathroom becomes a hub of preventive health care, not just hygiene. While the price tag and privacy concerns may make some users hesitate, others may welcome the ability to gain daily health insights without leaving their homes.

As health tech becomes more personal — and more intimate — devices like the Dekoda could become part of a broader shift toward smart, diagnostic environments in every room of the house.
