Barcelona’s Raphinha Reveals Saudi Temptation Before Flick’s Revival Plan
Barcelona winger Raphinha has revealed that he was seriously tempted by a big-money move to Saudi Arabia before new head coach Hansi Flick convinced him to stay at Camp Nou.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESPN, the Brazilian international admitted that a life-changing offer from the Saudi Pro League had made him consider walking away from Barcelona in the summer of 2024. However, after conversations with Flick, who replaced Xavi Hernández, Raphinha chose to remain — a decision that has proven crucial for both player and club.

“The offer we had from Saudi Arabia really tempted me. It would have solved not just my personal life, but also the lives of my parents, my son… a lot of people,” Raphinha said.
The 28-year-old winger, who joined Barcelona from Leeds United in 2022, faced growing speculation about his future after an underwhelming first two seasons in Catalonia. Rumors swirled about potential replacements, notably Athletic Club’s Nico Williams. Raphinha admitted feeling disrespected, particularly when a viral photo showed a fan wearing a Williams jersey with his No. 11 on the back.
“A lot of people wanted me out,” he told ESPN. “Suddenly, I wasn’t doing what they thought I should be doing… But I always had a clear conscience about what I was able to deliver.”
Despite the criticism, Raphinha’s commitment remained unwavering. When Flick was appointed, the former Bayern Munich manager quickly made it clear the Brazilian was part of his long-term vision. That faith was immediately rewarded.
Flick’s Faith, Raphinha’s Form
Utilised primarily on the left wing, Raphinha flourished under Flick. Last season, he scored an impressive 34 goals and contributed 26 assists across 57 appearances, helping Barça to a domestic treble — LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa.
Those numbers eclipsed his combined output from the two previous seasons, where he had managed just 20 goals in total.
“Maybe they wanted 30 goals per season, which isn’t really my style. I’m not a striker,” he said. “I’m a player who helps a lot with commitment, dedication, hard work… That’s Raphinha.”
His resurgence not only silenced critics but also led to a contract extension that ties him to Barcelona until 2028. The club’s renewed faith in him mirrors Flick’s tactical vision, which includes building around Raphinha’s versatility and energy on the flanks.
Injury Setback, Clásico Comeback?
So far in the 2025/26 campaign, Raphinha has netted three goals in seven matches. However, a recent thigh injury has sidelined him for Barcelona’s last three games. Sources close to the club suggest he is unlikely to feature in the upcoming match against Girona but could return just in time for the season’s first El Clásico on October 26 against Real Madrid.
With Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo both out injured, Raphinha’s expected return would provide a timely boost for Flick’s squad ahead of their biggest fixture of the season.
For now, the Brazilian reflects on the summer with relief — grateful he stayed when it seemed easier to walk away.
“I’m glad [Flick] convinced me to stay,” he said. “I know who I am and what I’ve been through to get here.”
