MLB and Sportsbooks Agree to Nationwide Limit on Pitch Bets

Major League Baseball, together with the country’s leading sports-betting operators, has agreed to impose a nationwide $200 wager cap on individual-pitch bets and ban them from inclusion in parlays. The move, announced Monday, aims to curb the risk of manipulation and preserve the integrity of the game

This decision follows an investigation triggered by unusual betting patterns tied to the Luis Ortiz-led scheme with the Cleveland Guardians. In two games last June, wagers on whether specific pitches would be balls or strikes — and even the speed of the pitch — raised red flags. Federal prosecutors later revealed the fraud allegedly netted bettors around $450,000

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised the sports-betting industry’s cooperation. “I commend the industry for working with us to take action on a national solution to address the risks posed by these pitch-level markets,” he said

Among those welcoming the agreement was Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who earlier advocated for a broader ban on micro-proposition wagers. “By limiting the ability to place large wagers on micro-prop bets, Major League Baseball is taking affirmative steps to protect the integrity of the game,” he stated

Leading operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel confirmed they’ll adjust their baseball-betting menus accordingly. DraftKings noted the legal market’s surveillance capabilities will act as a deterrent, while FanDuel emphasized its commitment to a “legal and regulated market that roots out abuses.

With this step, MLB and its partners aim to stay ahead of integrity threats in an era where betting markets evolve rapidly. The limitation underscores how even minor-seeming bets — like individual pitches — can pose major vulnerabilities if left unchecked.
