Trump Reverses Course on Epstein Files as GOP Pressures Transparency
President Donald Trump has dramatically shifted his stance on the release of Justice Department documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, urging House Republicans to support full disclosure — a notable reversal that underscores growing pressure from his own party.
A Strategic Pivot
On Sunday, Trump published a post on Truth Social calling on GOP lawmakers to vote in favor of releasing the Epstein files. “We have nothing to hide,” he wrote, framing the issue as one of transparency — and an opportunity for Republicans to move past what he continues to describe as a “Democrat hoax.”
This marks a sharp contrast to his prior messaging, when he dismissed calls for disclosure as political theater. In recent months, Trump labeled the Epstein matter a “hoax,” urging Republicans not to fall into what he called a “trap” set by his opponents.
GOP Pressure Mounts
The reversal comes as a bipartisan group in the House forces a vote on the Epstein Files Transparency Act, legislation that would require the Justice Department to declassify and release all records related to Epstein.
Four Republicans — Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Nancy Mace, and Thomas Massie — broke ranks to sign a discharge petition that compelled the vote.
Their defection illustrates growing frustration within GOP ranks over the party’s handling of Epstein’s legacy.
On top of that, new emails released by House Democrats include references to Trump. In one such email, Epstein allegedly wrote that Trump “knew about the girls,” though the precise meaning remains under debate.
Political Calculus & Reputation Risk
Trump’s pivot may be as much about optics as principle. By urging transparency now, he appears to be trying to blunt ongoing criticism of secrecy — even as he continues to question the motives behind the disclosures.
Some observers suggest this is a calculated move to appease parts of his base who remain intensely invested in Epstein’s case. According to recent analysis, Trump’s messaging patterns on Truth Social shift when the Epstein scandal heats up, aligning with what may be a broader communications strategy.
Stakes for the GOP
The push for full disclosure has become a litmus test for accountability. For critics, the Epstein documents represent not only potential revelations about powerful figures but also a symbolic fight over whether transparency can truly prevail.
As the House prepares for a vote, the question now is whether Trump’s reversal will be enough to bring more Republicans on board — or if the pressure from within his own party will continue to expose fault lines
