Philippines School Shooting Leaves Three Dead and Eight Injured

A Philippines school shooting at a high school in the southern province of South Cotabato has left three people dead and several others injured, according to local officials and police. The incident happened Friday at Banga National High School in the town of Banga, prompting an immediate emergency response and the suspension of classes across the municipality.

The victims were students, while the suspected shooter, also a student, died after the attack. Authorities are continuing to investigate what led to the shooting and how the teenager obtained the firearm used in the incident.

The shooting took place inside the school at about 1:15 p.m., according to the Philippine News Agency. Officials said the suspected gunman was a Grade 9 student who opened fire before turning the weapon on himself.

Initial reports from Al Jazeera said at least two students had been killed and eight people injured. Later reports from Reuters and other news organizations confirmed that the suspected shooter was also dead, bringing the reported death toll to three.

The victims were teenagers. Reuters reported that those involved in the incident were between 14 and 17 years old, while South Cotabato officials identified the two students killed as a boy and a girl, both 14.

At least eight people were reported injured in the latest accounts, with four of them described as being in critical condition.

Emergency Response Begins at Banga National High School

Police and emergency personnel quickly moved to secure the campus after the shooting. Medical responders transported injured students to hospitals for treatment as authorities worked to establish what had happened.
