Thailand Deploys T-50TH Fighter Jets in Escalating Air Campaign Against Cambodia
Thailand has escalated its ongoing border conflict with Cambodia by deploying T-50TH Golden Eagle fighter jets in active combat missions, marking the aircraft’s first operational use beyond training roles.
According to Cambodian government reports, the Thai military flew multiple sorties on December 24, 2025, using T-50TH jets to carry out airstrikes inside Cambodian provinces. Bombs were reportedly dropped in areas of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, and Siem Reap, with some strikes hitting civilian-adjacent locations. Cambodian officials described the attacks as indiscriminate and violations of international law.
The T-50TH Golden Eagle, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), had been primarily an advanced trainer for the Royal Thai Air Force. Thai military leaders confirmed that the jets have now been reconfigured for combat missions and are operating alongside existing platforms such as U.S.-made F-16 Fighting Falcons and Swedish Gripen aircraft.
This development comes amid a significant escalation of fighting along the Thai-Cambodian border that began in early December 2025. Both nations have engaged in cross-border artillery fire, airstrikes, and ground clashes over disputed territory. Prior to the T-50TH deployment, Thailand had already conducted dozens of air operations against Cambodian targets.
The intensification of aerial bombardments has fueled humanitarian concerns. Reports indicate that civilians— including children—have been displaced or forced to flee conflict zones, prompting calls from international and regional actors for immediate de-escalation and protection of non-combatants.
Despite intermittent calls for dialogue and ceasefire efforts by ASEAN members and global powers, fighting continues to strain relations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh. Both governments maintain that their military actions are defensive, though each side blames the other for initiating hostilities and violating ceasefire agreements.
As the conflict unfolds, the introduction of the T-50TH into Thailand’s combat operations marks a notable shift in the dynamics of Southeast Asia’s most serious border confrontation in decades
