Shawn Levy Reveals Major Third Act Change for “Star Wars: Starfighter”
Director Shawn Levy has unveiled that the conclusion of his highly anticipated film Star Wars: Starfighter will look dramatically different from its original plans, with a completely reworked third act. Speaking on the podcast On Film… With Kevin McCarthy, Levy revealed that the unexpected shift has turned out to be a blessing in disguise, and he’s thankful for the creative challenge.

Levy, who is currently in the midst of filming, explained that the original concept for the third act of Starfighter didn’t align with the evolving vision for the film. “We had a whole different idea for something in the third act,” Levy said. “Then things didn’t align, and I was forced to come up with a new idea. And I’m literally shooting that section of the movie right now. Every day, I’m grateful that the original idea didn’t work out, because the new one is so much better.”
The film, set to star Ryan Gosling in a yet-to-be-revealed role, is shaping up to be a highly unique entry in the Star Wars franchise. Unlike other Star Wars films, Starfighter isn’t a sequel, prequel, or spinoff featuring legacy characters. Instead, it’s set in an entirely new era of the Star Wars universe, exploring uncharted territories and concepts that have never before been seen on screen.
Levy, who’s no stranger to blockbuster films with his work on Deadpool 2, The Adam Project, and Stranger Things, acknowledged the immense pressure of working within the Star Wars universe. “This movie feels different because it’s Star Wars. It’s harder,” he explained. “There’s a unique pressure because you understand how deeply emotional the connection with audiences is. You could say that about Marvel or other franchises, but nothing has the kind of religious allegiance that Star Wars does.”
The Weight of Star Wars Legacy
For Levy, the challenge wasn’t just creating a compelling story, but making sure it remained authentic to Star Wars. “It’s not just about writing a good story. It’s about making design choices, character choices, planet choices, costume choices, droid choices, alien choices—everything needs to feel ‘Star Wars-y,’” Levy noted.
The pressure of working on a Star Wars film meant that the director felt a constant weight during the early stages of filming. “The first few weeks, it felt like this oppressive cloud over me. Every day, I had a hundred questions,” Levy revealed. “Starfighter isn’t a direct continuation of the saga. It’s its own story in a new part of the galaxy, which means we’re inventing everything from scratch. It’s a lot of creative responsibility.”
Despite these challenges, Levy remains optimistic about the direction the film is taking. He shared that the film’s development has drawn significant inspiration from the original trilogy, particularly Return of the Jedi. Levy hinted that the film will tap into the emotional and adventurous spirit of the earlier Star Wars films while forging its own path.
