HBO Renewed House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms with New Seasons Through 2028

HBO is keeping the Game of Thrones franchise alive and well for the next several years with the renewal of two major prequels: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The premium cable network confirmed that both series will continue with new seasons through 2028, ensuring fans of the iconic fantasy universe will have plenty of content to look forward to in the years ahead.

The renewal includes a fourth season of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel that explores the bloody history of House Targaryen. In addition, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, will return for a second season, set to air in 2026. With both shows alternating yearly releases, fans will enjoy a steady stream of Game of Thrones-related programming up to 2028.

A Structured Release Schedule for the Game of Thrones Universe

HBO has outlined the release schedule for the coming years. The first major event will be the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two on January 18, 2026. Following that, House of the Dragon season three will hit screens in the summer of 2026. The pattern will continue, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season three following in 2027, and House of the Dragon season four rounding out the schedule in 2028.

Francesca Orsi, Executive VP of HBO Programming, commented on the renewal, expressing excitement for the upcoming seasons. “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe,” Orsi said. “Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R.R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”

She added, “In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”

House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Two Unique Takes on Westeros

Both shows expand on the world of Game of Thrones, but each brings a unique flavor to the table. House of the Dragon delves deep into the history of House Targaryen, tracing its rise and eventual downfall. With its high-stakes political drama and dragons aplenty, it continues the legacy of Game of Thrones with its intricate plots and complex characters.

The show was co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, with Condal serving as showrunner. The series is executive produced by Martin, Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Vince Gerardis, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett. Since its debut, House of the Dragon has captivated audiences with its portrayal of the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.

On the other hand, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses on the adventures of Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and his squire, Egg, who is revealed to be Aegon Targaryen. Set nearly a century before the events of Game of Thrones, the show tells a more light-hearted, though still dangerous, story compared to the heavy political machinations of House of the Dragon. This show’s focus on a knight’s rise and his unlikely bond with his squire offers a fresh perspective on Westeros.

Ira Parker, a writer and co-executive producer on House of the Dragon, co-created A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms with Martin and serves as the showrunner. He is joined by executive producers Sarah Bradshaw, Owen Harris, Condal, and Gerardis.

A Steady Flow of Game of Thrones Content for Years to Come

The decision to alternate seasons of both prequels provides Game of Thrones fans with a unique opportunity to enjoy new content from the world of Westeros without having to wait for long periods between releases. This structured schedule promises a continuous flow of new episodes, keeping the fervor for the Game of Thrones universe alive and well through 2028.

The renewed commitment to these series comes as no surprise, given the immense success of House of the Dragon, which has already proved to be a fan favorite since its debut in 2022. Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offers the chance to explore new corners of the Game of Thrones universe, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The steady stream of Game of Thrones content will also provide an opportunity to deepen the connection between fans and the expansive world George R.R. Martin has created. As HBO continues to expand on his universe, the possibilities for future stories seem endless.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the Game of Thrones Franchise

While House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will dominate the Game of Thrones landscape for the next few years, HBO has other spin-offs and projects in development. Among these is A Song of Ice and Fire, a long-rumored series based on Martin’s novels, as well as potential projects exploring new characters and places within the world of Westeros.

As the popularity of these prequels grows, it’s clear that the Game of Thrones universe will remain a cornerstone of HBO’s programming for the foreseeable future, keeping fans engaged with new stories, characters, and battles.
