Valentina Shevchenko Backs Jean-Claude Van Damme to ‘Smoke’ Jake Paul After Hollywood Callout
A fresh challenger has stepped forward to face Jake Paul — and this time, it’s not a former MMA fighter or aging boxing champion.
Hollywood martial arts icon Jean-Claude Van Damme has publicly called out the YouTuber-turned-boxer, offering to meet him in the ring under modified rules and even pledging to donate part of his purse to charity. The unexpected challenge has since drawn backing from one of the UFC’s most dominant champions.

Valentina Shevchenko did not hesitate when weighing in on the potential showdown, boldly predicting that the action star would “smoke” Paul if the bout ever materializes.
A Different Kind of Opponent for ‘The Problem Child’
Jake Paul has built a polarizing boxing career by targeting big names from the world of mixed martial arts. Former UFC champions and veteran fighters have been regular fixtures on his résumé as he transitioned from internet celebrity to headline attraction.
But Van Damme represents a different archetype entirely.
While widely recognized for his blockbuster roles in 1980s and 1990s action films, Van Damme’s rise to stardom was rooted in legitimate martial arts competition. Before becoming a household name, the Belgian-born star competed in karate and kickboxing, earning a reputation for explosive kicks and athleticism that later defined his on-screen persona.
In a recent Instagram video, the 63-year-old actor addressed Paul directly, proposing a hybrid rule set.
“K-1 against boxing without low kicks and without elbows,” Van Damme said, suggesting a compromise between striking disciplines. He added that Paul could choose the location and emphasized that a portion of the purse would go to charity.
The message was both promotional and personal.
“I will not stop until you say yes,” Van Damme declared. “What do you have to lose? I’m a normal guy who just wants to kick your a–.”
Shevchenko’s Strong Endorsement
Among those who quickly reacted was Shevchenko, a long-time admirer of traditional martial arts and a fighter who herself carries a decorated background in Muay Thai and kickboxing.
Posting on X, the UFC flyweight champion offered unfiltered support for the Hollywood legend.
“The legend and father of western world Thai boxing, Jean-Claude Van Damme, will smoke baby Jake Paul and seek revenge for everyone!” she wrote. “The old school truly represents the real deal.”
Her comments tap into a broader sentiment within combat sports — a lingering tension between traditional martial artists and the influencer-driven spectacle that Paul has helped popularize.
For many purists, Paul’s rapid ascent and lucrative matchmaking represent a shift away from conventional merit-based progression. Backing Van Damme, in that context, feels symbolic: old school versus new wave.
Paul’s Next Move Remains Unclear
Paul, meanwhile, has remained focused on his own trajectory.
Earlier this year, he was seen supporting his fiancée, speed skating star Jutta Leerdam, as she claimed gold at the Winter Olympics while setting a record-breaking time. With his personal life in the spotlight, questions have also circled about his next professional step inside the ring.
An update recently suggested that Paul has instructed his business partner, Nakisa Bidarian, to begin preliminary negotiations for his next bout. As is often the case, there is no shortage of volunteers willing to share the spotlight with him.
Whether Van Damme’s challenge evolves into serious talks remains to be seen. Given Paul’s track record, spectacle has often translated into revenue — and few names from action cinema carry the nostalgic appeal of “JCVD.”
A Complicated History With MMA
Van Damme’s relationship with the MMA world has not always been smooth.
In 2018, former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt recounted an unusual and uncomfortable gym encounter involving the action star. During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Garbrandt described how Van Damme visited Team Alpha Male but allegedly arrived late and took considerable time warming up.
According to Garbrandt, tensions rose when Van Damme kicked him during what was described as a filmed interaction.
“It was just a circus act, to be honest,” Garbrandt said at the time, recalling that the situation felt more performative than respectful.
The episode sparked debate about authenticity — a theme that now resurfaces in discussions about a potential fight with Paul.
Entertainment or Competition?
At 63, Van Damme would be stepping into an entirely different arena compared to his film choreography days. Paul, 27, has the advantages of youth, recent training, and ring experience under professional boxing rules.
Yet the mere suggestion of the matchup has generated buzz, underscoring Paul’s unique position in combat sports. He thrives in the grey area between sport and spectacle — and Van Damme’s callout sits squarely in that space.
For Shevchenko and others who value traditional martial arts lineage, the appeal of the fight is clear: a symbolic clash between eras.
For Paul, it presents a different calculation — risk versus reward, legitimacy versus entertainment.
As negotiations swirl for his next fight, one thing remains consistent: wherever Jake Paul’s name surfaces, attention follows. Whether that attention leads him into the ring with a Hollywood legend is a question that now hangs in the air.
And if Shevchenko has her way, the outcome would be decisive.
