Quinn Hughes Traded to Minnesota Wild in Major Deal with Vancouver Canucks

In a blockbuster trade on Friday, the Vancouver Canucks have dealt star defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. The deal sends Hughes, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, to Minnesota in exchange for a promising package: forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round pick.

Canucks’ Rebuild and Hughes’ Departure
The trade marks the end of Hughes’ stellar eight-year tenure in Vancouver. Canucks president Jim Rutherford described the move as a difficult but necessary step in the team’s rebuild.

“It’s tough trading a player like Quinn,” Rutherford said. “We respect everything he’s done, but this is a move toward a younger, more sustainable future for the team.”

Hughes, 26, was selected 7th overall by the Canucks in 2018 and has since become one of the NHL’s elite defensemen. With 432 points in 459 career games, including 92 points in 2023-24, Hughes leaves a lasting legacy in Vancouver.

Vancouver’s Return: Young Talent and Future Assets
Vancouver receives a solid return, led by 24-year-old Marco Rossi, the 9th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. Rossi has been a key contributor for the Wild this season, with 13 points in 21 games.

Also included is 20-year-old defenseman Zeev Buium, a first-round pick in 2024, and 21-year-old forward Liam Ohgren, who has shown promise despite a quieter season.

“This return gives us the foundation for the future,” Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said. “These are talented young players who will help us build a competitive team moving forward.”

Minnesota’s Big Move
For the Wild, acquiring Hughes strengthens their defense and positions them for a deep playoff run. Minnesota, currently 3rd in the Central Division, is betting on Hughes’ elite skills to propel them further in the postseason.

Hughes’ Impact on Minnesota
Hughes joins a Wild team that has gone 14-3-2 in their last 19 games. His arrival bolsters an already solid defense and gives Minnesota a legitimate Norris-caliber defenseman to lead their blue line.
