Thai Forces Open Fire on Cambodian Troops at Preah Vihear Border

According to recent media reports, Thai military units fired on Cambodian soldiers along the disputed border region near Preah Vihear province.

What Happened

The exchange reportedly took place early in the day, with Thai forces engaging Cambodian positions. The Thai military said the shooting ended by mid-afternoon — around 2:32 p.m. local time. Cambodian forces, meanwhile, remained on high alert, continuing to monitor the situation.

Context: A Tense Border Zone

This incident occurs against the backdrop of renewed hostilities along the 817-kilometre Cambodia–Thailand border, especially around contested zones like Preah Vihear and the nearby Ta Muen Thom Temple. Earlier clashes in July 2025 saw widespread fighting involving heavy weapons, rocket fire and air-strikes — the deadliest such escalation in over a decade.

In that July conflict, both sides traded accusations: Thailand claimed Cambodian forces opened fire first, while Cambodia insisted Thai troops initiated an “armed assault,” forcing Cambodian units to respond in self-defence.

Fallout and Diplomatic Fallout

The July clashes triggered the closure of all land border crossings between the two countries, mass evacuations of civilians on both sides, and the recall of ambassadors … a major diplomatic rupture.

What’s at Stake

Observers warn that the recent opening of fire by Thai troops could reignite broader hostilities, jeopardizing fragile ceasefires and further destabilizing the border region. The area remains heavily militarized and deeply contested, anchored in decades-old historical and territorial claims
