Alexander Isak: “We Have to Stay Humble and Build Momentum” After Liverpool’s 2-0 Victory at West Ham
In the wake of Liverpool’s much-needed 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday, forward Alexander Isak shared his thoughts on his first Premier League goal for the club and the importance of staying grounded as the team looks to build momentum.
Isak, who joined Liverpool in the summer transfer window, broke his Premier League duck in clinical fashion, scoring the opener on the hour mark at the London Stadium. A well-timed cutback from fellow forward Cody Gakpo saw Isak slot the ball into the back of the net, sending the visiting Reds into a 1-0 lead. Gakpo then wrapped up the victory with a second goal in stoppage time, securing all three points for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

While the match result was vital for Liverpool’s morale, it was also a significant personal moment for Isak, who admitted it had been “a long time coming” since his first league goal for the club. Reflecting on his performance post-match, Isak spoke to Sky Sports and expressed a mixture of emotions.
“I’m aware that it’s been a long time coming,” Isak said. “I’ve been trying to get back to my best form and I’m still on the way. But I’m happy to have that goal.”
For the 25-year-old Swedish international, however, the most rewarding aspect of the match was the team’s win, rather than his personal achievement.
“It’s a mix of feelings, of course. The most important [and] best feeling today is that we won the game, that’s the best way to get a good spirit within the group, and that’s helpful for the individual as well,” he explained. “But, of course, I’m a striker, so scoring goals will always help me.”
A Much-Needed Victory
The win at West Ham halted a run of three consecutive defeats for Liverpool in all competitions, which had left the team reeling. Despite the importance of the victory, Isak was quick to remind his teammates that one win does not define their season, stressing the need for focus and continued hard work.
“We have to use this win in a good way,” Isak said. “But also be humble, because we’ve had a tough time. One win doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re back, we have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum.”
Liverpool now faces a crucial midweek clash at home to Sunderland on Wednesday before traveling to Leeds United next Saturday for their next Premier League outing. With the title defense still very much in play, Isak’s words resonate as Liverpool seeks to build a strong run of results.
Looking Ahead: The Road to Consistency
Although the victory was significant, it also highlighted the continued need for consistency as Liverpool looks to regain their place at the top of the Premier League. Isak’s goal, and Gakpo’s subsequent strike, was a testament to the attacking potential of the Reds, but Klopp will no doubt be looking for a more balanced team performance as they approach their next set of fixtures.
With 11 appearances in the 2025-26 season, Isak now has 2 goals and 1 assist to his name. The striker’s involvement in the team’s attacking play, along with his growing partnership with Gakpo, will be key to Liverpool’s success as they aim to recover from their recent slump.
As Isak continues to find his feet in Liverpool’s high-pressing system, his humble attitude and commitment to the team will be critical in helping the Reds push forward in the Premier League and beyond. The next few weeks will prove crucial as Klopp’s side looks to build momentum and rise up the table.
