Box Office Report: ‘Chainsaw Man’ Dominates with $8.5 Million Opening Day, ‘Regretting You’ Fights for Second

Chainsaw Man Tops the Box Office with an Impressive $8.5 Million Opening Day

Anime fans have plenty to celebrate this weekend as Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc claimed the top spot at the domestic box office. The film, based on the hit manga and anime series, kicked off with a stellar $8.5 million across Friday and preview screenings. This puts it on track for a projected $15.5 million opening.

The movie, which continues the storyline from the anime’s first season, is showing in over 3,000 theaters and available in both subtitled and dubbed versions. It’s also playing in Imax and premium large format (PLF) screens, which helps boost ticket sales. Early reviews are positive, with audiences giving it an A rating via CinemaScore, showing that Chainsaw Man is a crowd-pleaser.

While it won’t reach the jaw-dropping numbers of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle (which made a record $70.6 million in its opening), it’s still a big win for Sony’s Crunchyroll and the anime genre in general, which continues to lead the box office in a big way.

‘Regretting You’ Fights for Second Place with a $5.2 Million Opening Day

The race for second place is tight, with Regretting You narrowly edging ahead of Black Phone 2. The drama, based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, earned $5.2 million on its opening day. Directed by Josh Boone, the film stars Mckenna Grace, Mason Thames, and Allison Williams.

While Regretting You exceeded box office expectations, surpassing early predictions of a $8-10 million opening, it’s not exactly a blockbuster. With a $30 million production budget, it’s projected to finish the weekend with around $13 million. The film has drawn mixed reviews, and CinemaScore gave it a B, which is lower than the A- grade received by another Hoover adaptation, It Ends With Us.

Still, fans of Hoover’s work and those attracted to its fan event screenings (which featured a live Q&A with the cast) are helping to drive ticket sales. It’s clear that the audience for Colleen Hoover’s stories continues to be loyal, and this film may see sustained success in the coming weeks.

Bruce Springsteen Biopic ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’ Opens Fourth

Meanwhile, Deliver Me From Nowhere, a Bruce Springsteen biopic starring Jeremy Allen White, debuted in fourth place with a modest $3.5 million on opening day. The film, directed by Scott Cooper, dives into Springsteen’s life and legacy, offering fans a cinematic journey through his music career.

Despite some early buzz, Deliver Me From Nowhere didn’t quite meet expectations. The biopic is now projected to earn between $8 million and $12 million this weekend. At a hefty production cost of $55 million, the film will need strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews to remain relevant in theaters.

Audience reception is somewhat lukewarm with a B+ CinemaScore, but the movie does have some prestige credentials, including film festival appearances and Springsteen’s personal involvement in the film’s promotion.

‘Black Phone 2’ Holds Steady in Fifth, ‘Tron: Ares’ Struggles to Find Its Audience

In other notable openings, Black Phone 2 added $3.7 million on Friday, putting it on track for a solid second-weekend haul of around $12 million. Despite a 56% drop from its debut, the horror sequel is performing better than expected, with a domestic total projected to hit $48 million by the end of the weekend.

On the other hand, Tron: Ares, Disney’s big-budget revival of the Tron franchise, continued to struggle. Earning just $1.3 million on Friday, the film is now in its third weekend and has earned just $59 million domestically—far below its $180 million production cost. It’s clear that Tron: Ares will need to see a miracle to break even at this point.

Other Openings: ‘Shelby Oaks’ and More

In a more niche release, Neon’s horror-thriller Shelby Oaks earned $1.1 million on Friday across 1,823 locations. With mixed reviews, it’s on track for a seventh-place finish, but the film’s genre appeal may help it maintain some presence in theaters through the coming weeks.

Conclusion: Anime Dominates, but Competition is Fierce

This weekend’s box office numbers showcase a clear trend: anime is dominating, with Chainsaw Man leading the charge. However, traditional Hollywood releases aren’t out of the race yet, with Regretting You and Deliver Me From Nowhere offering strong competition. As always, the next few weeks will determine which films can maintain momentum, and whether Chainsaw Man will continue to reign supreme.
