Raila Odinga’s Body Arrives at Opoda Farm Ahead of Sunday Burial
Bondo, Kenya — The body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrived at his Opoda Farm residence in Bondo, Siaya County, on Saturday evening, marking the penultimate step in the week-long national farewell to one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

The plane carrying Odinga’s remains touched down at approximately 4:16 p.m., having departed earlier from Kisumu where thousands of mourners had gathered for a public viewing at the Mamboleo stadium. At Opoda Farm, a night vigil commenced immediately upon arrival, as preparations for Sunday’s burial entered their final stages.
A visibly emotional Mama Ida Odinga led the family in receiving the body at the homestead. Members of the public, who had waited patiently for hours under tight security, were allowed to file past the body to pay their final respects.
Thousands Mourn in Kisumu
Earlier in the day, Kisumu turned into a sea of humanity as mourners began arriving at Mamboleo stadium before dawn. Clad in black, waving flags, holding portraits, and singing dirges, the mourners paid homage to the late statesman whose political career shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.
The public viewing was delayed briefly due to a minor disruption, but order was swiftly restored through the coordinated efforts of Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli.
Among the first dignitaries to view the body were Raila Odinga Junior, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda.
By 3 p.m., the viewing concluded, and Odinga’s body was airlifted to Bondo, where the final vigil began at his family home.
Final Preparations Underway at Gravesite
At Opoda Farm, final touches on the gravesite were being completed in preparation for Sunday’s burial. The grave is located next to that of Raila’s father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, at the revered family grounds known as Kang’o ka Jaramogi.
Construction of the grave began on Thursday, October 16, with the National Construction Authority (NCA) overseeing the process to ensure structural and safety compliance.
Speaking during a site inspection on Saturday, NCA Chief Executive Officer Maurice Aketch expressed satisfaction with the work completed by the construction team.
“The team has been working overnight to ensure everything is ready for tomorrow. We have lifted the walling and are now applying the final finishes on the floor and walls,” said Aketch.
The structure includes reinforced walls, a protective canopy, and a tiled finish — designed to reflect both dignity and permanence.
According to Aketch, every stage of the build followed strict engineering protocols. “The short height of the walls and their proximity at the corners enhance stability, allowing us to accelerate finishing without compromising safety,” he noted.
A Nation Prepares to Say Goodbye
As the night vigil commenced under the quiet Bondo skies, the atmosphere at Opoda Farm remained solemn but dignified. The compound was heavily guarded, yet open to a steady stream of mourners who arrived to pay tribute to the man who for decades symbolized opposition politics and national unity.
Raila Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday in a private ceremony attended by family, close friends, and national leaders.
The burial at Kang’o ka Jaramogi marks the end of an era — and the beginning of a legacy that many say will endure beyond generations.
