FDA Approval Marks U.S. Entry for BVI’s FINEVISION HP Trifocal IOL

On October 14, 2025, BVI announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its FINEVISION HP trifocal intraocular lens (IOL). This approval represents a major step in expanding premium IOL options for American patients undergoing cataract surgery.

FINEVISION HP is described by BVI as the world’s first diffractive trifocal IOL, with a clinical track record spanning over 15 years and millions of implants globally. The design aims to deliver balanced vision at far, intermediate, and near distances, while managing visual disturbances often associated with multifocal optics.

Design Innovations & Technical Highlights

Diffractive Optics and Light Management

FINEVISION HP employs a diffractive optic design that allocates light energy across three focal points. To mitigate issues like glare or halos, it uses CoPODize™ technology—a combination of convolution and apodization—that smooths transitions in light distribution based on pupil size.

Haptic Platform & Stability

The lens is built on BVI’s proprietary POD platform, featuring a “double C-loop” with four-point haptics. This configuration supports rotational stability and ensures consistent centration within the capsular bag.

Material and Optical Clarity

FINEVISION HP’s hydrophobic acrylic material is engineered to be glistening-free, with a Grade 0 rating on the Miyata glistening scale in vitro. The lens also integrates optimized near vision power (3.5 D add) and intermediate add (1.75 D) to support a full range of vision.

Clinical Evidence & U.S. Study

Although FINEVISION has wide global use, BVI also conducted a U.S. clinical study (e.g. NCT04176965) to evaluate outcomes in the American patient population. The study supported the safety and effectiveness profile required for FDA approval.

Independent ophthalmology publications note that the new design “harmonizes light distribution and minimizes visual disturbances,” while the double C-loop structure supports long-term stability. The clinical usage history and peer feedback further bolster confidence in the lens’s performance.

It’s worth noting that the FDA has, in prior IOL approvals, incorporated patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments—such as visual disturbance or spectacle dependence questionnaires—into labeling and evaluation.

Market Impact & Rollout Strategy

BVI anticipates strong demand for FINEVISION HP in the U.S. The company is scaling manufacturing capacity and plans a phased rollout beginning in late 2025, with broader availability through early to mid-2026. The lens will also be showcased at the AAO Annual Meeting (Orlando, Oct. 18–20, 2025) at BVI’s booth 3521.

This approval strengthens BVI’s position in the U.S. premium IOL market, complementing recent regulatory successes like its laser endoscopy ophthalmic system (Leos) 510(k) clearance. BVI was also recently honored for innovation and product launches at the 2025 Medical Device Network Excellence Awards.

Considerations & Future Outlook

  • Surgeon adoption & training: Successful adoption will depend on surgeon familiarity with trifocal optics and intraoperative techniques.
  • Patient selection: As with any premium IOL, careful selection (corneal condition, ocular health, expectations) remains critical to minimize postoperative dissatisfaction.
  • Comparative competition: The U.S. premium IOL space includes other trifocal and extended-depth-of-focus (EDoF) lenses. How FINEVISION HP competes on metrics like contrast sensitivity, visual disturbances, and patient satisfaction will influence its uptake.
  • Long-term data: While the global user base is extensive, continued post-market surveillance and U.S.-specific real-world evidence will help refine indications and broaden confidence
