Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave is an unusually ambitious entry in Nintendo and Intelligent Systems’ long-running tactical RPG series. Rather than focusing on a single hero and a straightforward campaign, the game builds its story around four major protagonists whose lives gradually become connected.

The result is a sprawling adventure that mixes traditional Fire Emblem strategy with exploration, character development, dungeon encounters, and a surprisingly elaborate narrative structure. The game launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.

At the center of the story are Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Each enters the Heroic Games with a different motivation and personal goal. Players can move between their stories, allowing the four campaigns to develop alongside one another instead of forcing the player to complete one route before seeing the others.

The opening premise initially suggests that Fortune’s Weave is about a massive tournament. However, the story eventually reveals a much larger conflict.

The world players experience during much of the adventure is actually part of a larger plan involving the past and future. Five years after the events surrounding the Heroic Games, the world faces destruction following the return of the demon god Balor. A mysterious hero must travel into the past and alter the destinies of four champions in an attempt to create a fighting force capable of confronting that future threat.

That structure gives each protagonist greater importance. Their individual struggles are not simply side stories. Their decisions and growth contribute to a much larger narrative that eventually brings their paths together.

It is an approach that gives Fortune’s Weave a scale rarely seen in the series.

Tactical Combat Remains the Heart

Despite all the additional systems, Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave never loses sight of the strategic combat that defines the franchise.

Battles continue to revolve around positioning units carefully on a grid. Swords, axes, spears, bows, magic, gauntlets, and other weapons create different tactical possibilities. Players must consider enemy positions, unit abilities, terrain, movement, and the strengths and weaknesses of individual characters before committing to an attack.

New mechanics add another layer of risk.

Combat Arts can dramatically increase a unit’s offensive power, but they consume weapon durability. Blaze Arts are even more powerful character-specific abilities, but using them costs HP. That creates meaningful decisions during difficult encounters because the strongest move is not always the safest one.

The rewind system also returns, giving players the opportunity to correct mistakes and rethink important turns. For a game with such a large number of battles, that feature can make experimentation considerably less frustrating.

One of Fortune’s Weave’s biggest changes is how much happens between major fights.

During Free Time, players can train their characters, purchase equipment, study opponents, complete quests, improve relationships, recruit new allies, and participate in activities that provide useful bonuses.

The game also includes a certification system that allows characters to qualify for different classes. Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced classes offer different combat roles, encouraging players to experiment with team compositions instead of relying on a single setup.

Outside the main city, the world map provides additional opportunities for exploration. Players can visit towns, search for resources, uncover treasures, encounter enemies, and enter dungeons.

Interestingly, dungeon battles use traditional turn-based combat rather than the familiar grid-based system. This gives the adventure a different rhythm and prevents the entire game from feeling like one extended series of tactical maps.

A Massive Fire Emblem Adventure

The biggest strength of Fortune’s Weave is also one of its biggest challenges: its size.

There is an enormous amount to see and manage. The four protagonists each bring their own stories, characters, battles, and objectives. Meanwhile, the wider campaign introduces additional systems that can demand considerable attention.

For dedicated strategy RPG players, that depth can be a major attraction. For players who prefer shorter and more focused adventures, the sheer volume of content may occasionally feel overwhelming.

Game Informer’s review ultimately gave the game an 8.75/10, reflecting an experience with impressive ambition, memorable characters, and substantial tactical depth, while recognizing that the enormous scope can sometimes work against the game’s pacing.

A Strong Showcase for Switch 2

Fortune’s Weave also benefits from being designed specifically for Nintendo Switch 2.

The larger scale of the environments, detailed character models, elaborate battle effects, and extensive world help give the game a more substantial visual presentation than previous entries. Other reviews have also highlighted its soundtrack, voice performances, and technical presentation as important parts of the experience.

More importantly, the hardware gives Intelligent Systems room to build a Fire Emblem game around a much broader sense of scale.

Final Thoughts

Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave is not content to simply repeat the formula that made previous entries successful. It expands the series with four interconnected protagonists, a time-spanning story, deeper character customization, additional exploration, dungeon encounters, and a large collection of activities outside combat.

That ambition does come with some drawbacks. The amount of content can feel excessive, and certain activities may become repetitive over a long campaign. Still, the tactical foundation remains strong, while the interconnected storytelling gives the adventure a distinctive identity.

For players who enjoy strategy RPGs and want a lengthy adventure filled with character development, customization, exploration, and tactical battles, Fortune’s Weave offers an exceptionally large package.
