Elon Musk Becomes First Person in History to Reach $500 Billion Net Worth

| October 2, 2025

Elon Musk has crossed another unprecedented financial frontier, becoming the first person in history to amass a net worth of $500 billion.
According to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires tracker, Musk reached the half-trillion-dollar mark around 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, cementing his position as the world’s richest person. The milestone places him nearly $150 billion ahead of second-place billionaire Larry Ellison and halfway to a once-unimaginable benchmark: the trillionaire title.

Though brief—his wealth dipped slightly to close the day at $499.1 billion—the symbolic milestone marks a new apex in the Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s financial journey

A $500 Billion Milestone Fueled by Tesla Surge

Musk’s surge past the $500 billion mark was largely driven by a 4% jump in Tesla shares on Wednesday, which added an estimated $9.3 billion to his fortune in a single day. The electric vehicle maker’s stock has nearly doubled since April, when Musk announced he would shift his focus back to Tesla, stepping away from his controversial role in President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Tesla’s market capitalization is now within 10% of its December all-time high, pushing the value of Musk’s 12% stake in the company to $191 billion. Notably, that figure excludes the $133 billion in performance-based stock options tied to a 2018 compensation package—currently under legal review after being voided by a Delaware judge in early 2024.

Forbes continues to discount the value of those options by 50% pending the outcome of Musk’s appeal to the Delaware Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s board has proposed a fresh, potentially historic compensation package worth up to $1 trillion, contingent on the company achieving “Mars-shot” performance milestones—including an eightfold increase in market cap over the next decade.

Beyond Tesla: SpaceX and xAI Add to Musk’s Empire

Tesla may be the engine, but it’s far from the only source of Musk’s wealth. SpaceX, the private aerospace firm Musk founded in 2002, is now valued at $400 billion following a private tender offer in August. With a 42% stake, Musk’s share of SpaceX is worth roughly $168 billion.

Then there’s xAI Holdings, the AI-focused company Musk launched earlier this year through the merger of xAI and social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The combined entity is currently valued at $113 billion, with Musk’s 53% stake estimated at $60 billion.

All told, these holdings have lifted Musk to a net worth that dwarfs previous records. And despite the financial figures, Musk insists his ambitions are tied less to personal wealth and more to influence and control over emerging technologies.

“It’s not about ‘compensation’, but about me having enough influence over Tesla to ensure safety if we build millions of robots,” Musk posted on X in September. “If I can just get kicked out in the future by activist shareholder advisory firms who don’t even own Tesla shares themselves, I’m not comfortable with that future.”

A Meteoric Rise From $25 Billion to $500 Billion

Musk’s trajectory over the past five years has been nothing short of historic. In March 2020, his net worth stood at just $24.6 billion. By August of that year, he had become one of the few individuals ever worth $100 billion. He first claimed the top spot as the world’s richest person in January 2021 and has since soared past every major milestone:

  • $200 billion in September 2021
  • $300 billion in November 2021
  • $400 billion in December 2024
  • $500 billion in October 2025

If that trajectory continues, Musk could realistically become the world’s first trillionaire before March 2033—the first vesting date tied to his newly proposed $1 trillion Tesla compensation package.

While critics question the ethics of such wealth in a world of increasing inequality, there’s little doubt Musk’s ambitions—for Mars, for AI, and for global energy transformation—are only gaining momentum.
