Trump Heads to South Korea for High-Level Talks Amid North Korea Missile Launch

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with South Korean President Lee Jae‑myung in the South Korean city of Gyeongju as part of his Asia tour, with trade and defence at the top of the agenda.

Their discussions come at a tense moment: North Korea has just conducted a test of sea-to-surface cruise missiles in its western waters — a move described by its state media as part of strengthening its nuclear deterrent.

South Korea’s military confirmed detection of missile launch preparations and is analysing the weapons with the U.S. as joint readiness remains high.

On the trade side, the U.S.–South Korea negotiations face hurdles. Trump has pressed Seoul for larger investments into U.S. industries and increased defence contributions, while South Korea seeks protections for its own economic interests and workers.

Despite high-level expectations, analysts say a comprehensive deal is unlikely to be finalised at this meeting.

On security, the agenda is equally heavy: the two leaders are expected to revisit military cooperation on the Korean Peninsula, especially in light of North Korea’s recent missile activity. The timing of the tests — just days before the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit and Trump’s visit — appears to signal Pyongyang’s intent to assert its strategic posture.

Trump has also expressed a willingness to meet Kim Jong‑un of North Korea, although no such meeting has been scheduled. At the same time, North Korea made clear that it will not relinquish its nuclear arsenal, complicating prospects for renewed diplomacy.

What to watch next:

Whether the trade negotiations yield any concrete commitments, particularly in shipbuilding, semiconductors and energy investment.

How the defence dialogue responds to North Korea’s missile activity and what announcements might emerge about the U.S.–South Korea military posture.

Any movement on North Korea diplomacy — even indirect signals from Pyongyang ahead of the summit.
