Apple Introduces iPhone 17e with A19 Chip, 48MP Camera and 256GB Starting Storage

CUPERTINO, California — Apple Inc. on Monday unveiled the iPhone 17e, positioning it as a more affordable yet powerful addition to its latest smartphone lineup. Designed to deliver flagship-level performance at a lower entry point, the device combines the company’s newest A19 chip, an upgraded cellular modem, enhanced durability, and double the starting storage — all beginning at $599.

The iPhone 17e will be available for pre-order starting March 4, with retail availability beginning March 11 across more than 70 countries and regions.

Performance Powered by A19

At the core of the iPhone 17e is Apple’s latest-generation A19 processor, built on advanced 3-nanometer architecture. The six-core CPU delivers performance up to twice as fast as older models such as iPhone 11, according to Apple, while improving overall energy efficiency.

Graphics performance also receives a boost. A four-core GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators enables advanced gaming experiences, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing for more realistic lighting and reflections. Apple says the upgraded 16-core Neural Engine is optimized for large generative models, supporting on-device artificial intelligence features branded as Apple Intelligence.

Complementing the chip is Apple’s newest in-house modem, C1X. The company says the modem is up to twice as fast as its predecessor in the iPhone 16e and consumes 30 percent less power than the modem found in the iPhone 16 Pro, contributing to improved battery life.

A Familiar Design, Now More Durable

The iPhone 17e retains a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display but introduces Ceramic Shield 2, an updated front cover designed to improve scratch resistance by up to three times compared with the previous generation. An anti-reflective coating further enhances visibility outdoors, where the display can reach up to 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness.

The device features an aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure and carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Face ID remains the primary biometric authentication method, while the customizable Action button offers quick access to frequently used features.

Available in black, white, and a new soft pink finish, the phone carries a matte texture aimed at delivering a more premium feel at its price tier.

48MP Camera System with Advanced Portraits

Photography continues to be a central focus. The 48-megapixel Fusion camera enables users to shoot high-resolution images or default to 24MP for balanced quality and file size. It also introduces an optical-quality 2x telephoto capability, effectively functioning as two cameras in one lens system.

Portrait photography benefits from an upgraded image pipeline that automatically captures depth data for people and even pets. Users can adjust focus and background blur after taking the shot, offering greater flexibility during editing.

Video capabilities include 4K recording in Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second. The device also captures Spatial Audio, designed for immersive playback on compatible devices. Wind noise reduction and enhanced machine learning algorithms aim to improve sound clarity in challenging environments.

MagSafe and Faster Charging

MagSafe support returns to the more affordable tier, enabling wireless charging up to 15W using Qi2 technology — a notable improvement over earlier entry-level models. Wired charging via USB-C can deliver up to 50 percent battery in approximately 30 minutes, Apple says.

MagSafe compatibility also opens access to a broader ecosystem of accessories, including wallets, cases, charging stands, and camera attachments.

Satellite Connectivity and Safety Features

Apple continues to expand its satellite-based communication features. When outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, users can access Messages via satellite, Emergency SOS via satellite, Roadside Assistance, and location sharing through the Find My app.

Crash Detection remains built in, automatically contacting emergency services in the event of a severe car accident if the user is unable to respond.

iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence

The iPhone 17e ships with iOS 26, introducing a redesigned interface featuring what Apple calls “Liquid Glass” visuals. The software integrates new Apple Intelligence capabilities, including Live Translation across Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls.

Additional features include Call Screening for unknown numbers, Hold Assist for customer service calls, and enhanced message filtering to reduce unwanted communication.

Environmental Commitments

Apple says the iPhone 17e aligns with its broader environmental strategy under the Apple 2030 initiative. The device contains 30 percent recycled materials, including 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and fully recycled cobalt in the battery. Packaging is entirely fiber-based and recyclable.

The company states that 55 percent of the manufacturing electricity used across its supply chain for the device comes from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 17e starts at $599 in the United States for the 256GB model, doubling the entry storage offered in previous generations at the same price point. A 512GB configuration will also be available.

Carrier trade-in programs may offer up to $400 in credit for older devices such as iPhone 11 and up to $599 for iPhone 13, depending on eligibility. Monthly installment options begin at $24.95 over 24 months in the U.S.

Pre-orders open March 4 at 6:15 a.m. PST, with general availability beginning March 11 in markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, India, Australia, and Canada.

With stronger performance, enhanced durability, expanded satellite connectivity, and double the starting storage, Apple appears to be positioning the iPhone 17e as a long-term upgrade option for users seeking premium features without crossing into flagship pricing territory.
