Arsenal Claims Christmas Top Spot as Haaland Overtakes Ronaldo’s Premier League Goal Tally

The Premier League title race is heating up as Arsenal finishes the calendar year in the top spot. A 1-0 victory at Everton, secured by Viktor Gyokeres’ first-half penalty, means the Gunners will spend Christmas Day at the summit for the fifth time since the Premier League’s inception in 1992. However, history is not on their side, with Arsenal failing to clinch the title in all four previous seasons they topped the table at Christmas.

Despite their strong start, Manchester City remains in close pursuit, just two points behind in second place. The defending champions extended their winning streak to five matches with a dominant 3-0 win over West Ham, and Erling Haaland’s brace has once again placed him in the spotlight.
Haaland Surpasses Ronaldo
Erling Haaland continues to defy expectations in his first full season with Manchester City. With two goals against West Ham, Haaland has now scored 19 goals in 17 matches this campaign—remarkable given his relentless scoring form. His brace not only secured three points for City but also saw him surpass Cristiano Ronaldo on the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring list.
Haaland’s goals have brought his total to 104 in the competition, one more than Ronaldo, who had two spells at Manchester United. Remarkably, Haaland has achieved this feat in just 122 matches, compared to Ronaldo’s 243 games. The Norwegian striker’s clinical finishing continues to make him one of the most feared attackers in the Premier League.
City manager Pep Guardiola, despite the emphatic win, was not completely satisfied with his side’s performance. “I said to the players, ‘Merry Christmas everyone but it will not be enough if we don’t improve,’” Guardiola commented, reflecting the demanding standards he holds for his team.
Liverpool, Chelsea, and Struggles at the Bottom
Elsewhere, Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over a nine-man Tottenham, but the win was marred by an injury to their record signing, Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker scored a goal but sustained an ankle injury in the process, leaving the field with a limp after a challenge from Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven.
Chelsea, on the other hand, fought back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw at Newcastle. The Blues, who have struggled for consistency this season, remain in fourth place but have won only one of their last five league matches.
At the other end of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers are still without a win this season. A 2-0 defeat to Brentford at home means Wolves have now matched Sheffield United’s 2020-21 record of 17 games without a victory from the start of a Premier League campaign. Wolves are also enduring a club-record 10 consecutive league defeats, with little hope in sight.
Woltemade and Semenyo’s Impressive Performances
While some clubs struggle, others are finding hope in new talent. Nick Woltemade, who made headlines last week for scoring an own goal in a loss to Sunderland, quickly redeemed himself by scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes of his team’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo continues to impress after reports linking him with top Premier League clubs like Manchester City and Manchester United. His stunning goal helped secure a 1-1 draw with Burnley, ending Bournemouth’s seven-match losing streak in the top flight.
The Title Race: Arsenal’s Challenge
With the title race intensifying, Arsenal remains in a strong position despite the pressure from Manchester City. However, the Gunners’ Christmas top spot carries historical baggage—having led at this stage only to falter in past seasons. Arsenal’s challenge will be to maintain their momentum as the second half of the season unfolds.
For now, it’s Manchester City and Haaland who remain the primary challengers, and with the Norwegian’s form showing no signs of slowing, the battle for the Premier League title looks set to go down to the wire.
