Pixel 10 Pro Fold Review: Google’s Bold Bet to Make Foldables Sturdier

Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold may look strikingly similar to its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but it’s packing some significant upgrades—chiefly in the durability department. The foldable phone market, which is still relatively new, has long struggled with one major concern: how well can these devices hold up to daily wear and tear? In this review, we’ll take a deep dive into the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s durability, performance, and unique features, and explore whether it justifies its hefty price tag.

A More Durable Foldable

One of the most significant changes with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is its IP68 rating, a first for Google’s foldable line. While other manufacturers, like Samsung, have made progress in protecting their foldables against dust and water, Google has now taken the lead. This means that, unlike its predecessors, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is dustproof and can withstand submersion in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes—ideal for those who worry about accidental spills or dust getting into the hinge mechanism.

Speaking of the hinge, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold introduces a new gearless hinge system, which ensures a more secure, snug fold with little to no gap. This innovation not only minimizes the potential for dirt or debris to get inside the device, but it also adds a satisfying level of resistance when unfolding the phone. Although I didn’t test it in sand, daily usage (from pockets to bags) showed no ill effects, proving Google’s efforts in improving durability.

Hardware and Performance: A Subtle Evolution

At a glance, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is nearly identical to last year’s model in terms of design. However, there are a few key changes worth noting. For starters, the Tensor G5 processor powers the device, providing enough power for most tasks. However, in benchmark tests, the G5 lags behind some of its competitors. It handles day-to-day activities like browsing and media consumption without issue, but for heavy multitasking or gaming, it may fall short compared to devices powered by Snapdragon’s top-tier chips.

In terms of battery life, Google has opted for a slightly larger battery compared to its predecessor, ensuring that the foldable can last longer through the day. Pair that with a brighter display, and you’ve got a device that’s much more usable outdoors. However, it’s worth noting that the bezel around the display is notably thicker than what you might find on other recent phones, which some users might find off-putting.

AI and Software Features: Google’s Strengths Shine

As expected, Google leverages its AI capabilities to enhance the Pixel 10 Pro Fold experience. The phone comes equipped with several software features that improve usability and multitasking. One standout is Magic Cue, which intelligently surfaces suggestions based on the apps and data you use most, including Maps, Gmail, and Keep. Additionally, Call Translation and Gemini Live with video view add to the overall Google ecosystem experience, ensuring that you’re always getting the most out of your device.

Of course, the camera software also benefits from Google’s AI. However, unlike the Pixel 10 Pro’s 50MP main sensor, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes with a more modest camera setup, featuring a 48MP primary sensor, a 10.8MP telephoto sensor, and a 10.5MP ultrawide lens. It also includes dual 10MP selfie cameras on both the cover display and inner display. The main camera performs well in most conditions, but it’s clear that the telephoto and ultrawide lenses don’t quite hold up, particularly in low light.

One frustration that cropped up during my testing was the macro mode; whenever I tried to take close-up shots (like of an AirPods case), the camera would automatically switch to macro mode even when I wasn’t particularly close to the subject. For those expecting to use Google’s AI Zoom for shots like 100x zoom, you’ll be disappointed to know this feature is missing from the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

The “Pro” Confusion

A subtle but interesting issue arises with the inclusion of the “Pro” moniker in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s name. Traditionally, “Pro” devices from Google are the top-of-the-line models, but the Pixel 10 Pro Fold doesn’t quite fit the bill in terms of performance. While it excels in certain areas like durability, there are clear compromises when compared to the Pixel 10 Pro and other top-tier devices.

In particular, the foldable lacks the vapor chamber cooling and 42MP selfie camera found on the regular Pixel 10 Pro. Also, 25W Qi2 charging is only available on the Pixel 10 Pro XL, leaving the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with slower charging capabilities. This raises the question—should Google have left out the “Pro” designation entirely for the Pixel foldable?

A Unique Offering in a Crowded Market

Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold stands out in a sea of sleek, ultra-thin foldables from brands like Samsung, Oppo, and Honor. While those devices may be thinner and lighter, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold embraces a more chunky and substantial design. Its focus is squarely on sturdiness and longevity, with innovations like the IP68 rating and improved hinge durability setting it apart.

That being said, camera performance is a significant weakness in this model when compared to Google’s non-foldable devices. For users who are deeply invested in Google’s ecosystem and want a reliable foldable, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is an appealing option. At a starting price of $1,799, it undercuts Samsung’s Z Fold 7 by $200, offering a more affordable foldable experience for those seeking the signature Pixel features in a new form factor.

Conclusion: A Strong, If Flawed, Foldable

In conclusion, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a durable and feature-rich foldable that caters to those looking for sturdiness and longevity over cutting-edge performance. With the added IP68 rating, gearless hinge, and AI-powered software, it delivers a solid user experience. However, its camera setup and lack of high-end features may leave some users longing for the performance and polish found in Google’s slab phones.

For users seeking a Google-centric foldable that prioritizes durability over raw power, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a worthy contender—but it’s not without its compromises.
