Cambodian Military Denies Thailand’s Border Encroachment Claims
Cambodia’s Defence Ministry has issued a strong rebuttal to recent accusations from Thailand, firmly denying any territorial incursions by Cambodian forces along the shared border. The response comes amid rising tensions rooted in conflicting claims over sensitive border areas.
Background of the Dispute
Over the past months, Thailand has accused Cambodia of encroaching on Thai territory, installing infrastructure, and deviating from agreed patrol routes. one instance, Thai authorities claimed Cambodian villagers “invaded” 17 border points, charging that parts of those zones lie within Thailand.
In turn, Cambodian officials assert that many of these locales remain undemarcated and that the Thai maps used in public announcements misrepresent mutually agreed boundaries under the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding.
Cambodia’s Rebuttal & Position
In its official statement, the Ministry of National Defence characterized Thailand’s claims as “baseless and misleading.”It urged restraint, respect for sovereignty, and the use of bilateral mechanisms such as the Joint Border Committee (JBC) to manage disputes.
Cambodian military spokespeople also challenged Thailand’s maps, saying the red and blue boundary lines presented are technically inaccurate and not mutually accepted. The Secretariat of Border Affairs echoed this, clarifying that certain documents in circulation were merely geographic references, not finalized border lines.
Landmine Incident & Military Patrols
A flashpoint in the dispute has been a landmine explosion on Thai soil on July 16, which injured Thai soldiers. Thailand claims Cambodia planted the mines; Cambodia denies this, stressing the mines predate current tensions and originate from past conflicts.
Cambodia argues that Thai patrols strayed outside agreed routes into contaminated zones, making them vulnerable to old mines. Meanwhile, Cambodia has urged Thailand to strictly adhere to the 2000 MoU’s patrol paths to avoid further incidents.
Recent Developments & Diplomatic Pressure
Tensions have escalated beyond the bilateral level. Cambodia has formally requested the release of detained soldiers and condemned Thailand’s aggressive posture. International actors, including the U.S. and Malaysia, are working to expand a fragile ceasefire ahead of the ASEAN summit. Amid these dynamics, both nations face pressure to deescalate and return to dialogue-based resolution.
Outlook
Cambodia’s response underscores a consistent theme: rejection of unilateral claims and insistence on resolving disputes through established diplomatic and legal channels. With territory still undemarcated in many zones, the risk of misinterpretation remains high. A lasting resolution will require transparency, mutual respect, and international support for mediation efforts.
