Airlines Waive Change Fees as Storm Threatens U.S. East Coast Travel
October 13, 2025 — Several major U.S. airlines have introduced flexible travel policies as a powerful coastal storm approaches the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, potentially disrupting air travel through early next week.

The National Weather Service has issued flood watches and high-wind advisories stretching from Newport News, Virginia, to Portland, Maine, with the worst of the storm expected from Sunday into Monday night. In anticipation of the severe weather, airlines are allowing passengers to adjust their travel plans without penalty.
American Airlines was among the first to announce a waiver, allowing customers scheduled to fly on Sunday to rebook their flights without paying change fees or fare differences. The policy covers more than a dozen airports along the East Coast, provided travelers rebook within the same cabin and complete travel later in the week.
Other carriers, including Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and JetBlue Airways, followed suit, offering similar accommodations to passengers flying in and out of the storm-affected corridor.
“We encourage customers to check their flight status and take advantage of our flexible rebooking options,” a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines said in a statement Saturday.
As of Saturday afternoon, the overall impact on airline operations was limited, with only minimal delays and cancellations reported, according to data from flight-tracking service FlightAware.
Still, meteorologists warn that conditions could rapidly deteriorate Sunday afternoon into Monday, potentially leading to more widespread disruptions.
What Travelers Should Know
- Airports covered: Major hubs including Boston Logan (BOS), New York’s JFK and LaGuardia (LGA), Philadelphia International (PHL), Washington Reagan (DCA), and Baltimore/Washington (BWI) are included in most airlines’ waiver policies.
- Rebooking windows: Most airlines are allowing rescheduled flights through mid to late next week, depending on availability and storm duration.
- Fees waived: Change fees and fare differences are being waived for one-time changes, provided passengers stick to the same route and service class.
Travel experts recommend that passengers monitor their airline’s website or mobile app for the latest alerts and utilize customer service channels early to secure rebooking options.
Airlines Embrace Flexibility Amid Climate Events
Storm-related fee waivers have become increasingly common in recent years, as airlines aim to reduce last-minute chaos during major weather events. The proactive approach also aligns with broader industry efforts to improve customer satisfaction amid a changing climate landscape.
“By getting ahead of the storm, airlines can help reduce airport congestion and improve safety for passengers and crew,” said transportation analyst Karen Morley.
As the storm system strengthens, travelers are urged to build flexibility into their plans and prepare for the possibility of last-minute schedule changes.
