Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Gets a New Overview

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is approaching its worldwide launch, and Bandai Namco has released a new five-minute β€œ101 Overview” trailer designed to give players a final look at what awaits them in the cockpit.

The latest trailer brings together the game’s major features, from its story-driven campaign and aerial combat to squadron management, aircraft customization, giant enemy weapons and online multiplayer. Developed by Bandai Namco Aces and Project Aces, the new entry is positioned as a major expansion of the long-running flight action series.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to launch on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.

With launch day approaching, the overview trailer serves as a broad introduction for newcomers while highlighting several systems returning fans will encounter when they take control of their aircraft.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Puts Players in the Middle of War

The campaign takes place in the fictional world of Strangereal, where the Federation of Central Usea has suffered a devastating attack from the Republic of Sotoa.

According to Bandai Namco’s official overview, the FCU has lost its capital following a blitzkrieg, leaving the country struggling to maintain its defenses. The player takes on the role of the pilot known as the Wings of Theve, a figure who becomes an important symbol for the country’s resistance.

The story is not presented entirely from the cockpit. Ace Combat 8 also introduces first-person scenes and cinematic sequences designed to show the pilot’s experiences away from combat.

That approach gives the campaign a more personal angle. Between missions, players will interact with squad members, develop relationships and deal with the pressure surrounding their role as the conflict grows.

The central theme combines aerial warfare with questions of duty, leadership and survival.

Ace Combat 8 Features a Living Battlefield

One of the major visual highlights shown in the Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve overview is its dynamic sky system.

The campaign features multi-layered cloudscapes intended to make the atmosphere feel more active and unpredictable. Instead of simply serving as background scenery, the sky becomes an important part of the game’s presentation as aircraft race through changing environments.

The series continues to emphasize fast arcade-style flight rather than attempting to become a traditional military flight simulator. Players can perform aggressive maneuvers, engage enemy aircraft and deploy a wide selection of weapons while moving through large aerial battlefields.

The result is a familiar Ace Combat formula with a larger emphasis on visual spectacle and cinematic presentation.

The new game has also been developed using Unreal Engine 5, with Bandai Namco promising significant improvements to the series’ visual quality and aerial environments.

Missions Go Beyond Traditional Dogfights

Dogfighting remains at the heart of Ace Combat 8, but the campaign will require players to handle several different types of missions.

The official overview identifies three broad categories: aerial dogfights, ground-support operations and naval strikes.

That variety means aircraft selection and weapon loadouts can become important before each sortie. Players are encouraged to examine mission briefings and select equipment according to the threats they expect to encounter.

A fighter configured for air-to-air combat may not be the best option when the objective shifts toward ground targets or enemy ships.

Special weapons are also an important part of the system. Players will need to decide which weapons and aircraft configurations best suit each operation, adding another layer of preparation before entering combat.

Squadmates Add a New Tactical Layer

The Wings of Theve will not operate alone.

The campaign features a squadron consisting of several pilots, including Ellington Baxter, Tasha Severskaya and William Coster. Each character brings a different background and personality to the team.

Baxter is presented as an experienced pilot who can provide leadership and battlefield knowledge. Severskaya comes from an aerobatic background, while Coster serves as a quieter but capable member of the squadron.

Their roles extend beyond simply appearing in cutscenes.

Players can direct squadmates toward specific targets, divide them across different objectives, request defensive support or make use of their special weapons. That means successful missions can depend not only on individual flying ability but also on how players coordinate their team.

The system could make some of the game’s larger battles more tactical, particularly when multiple enemy formations or objectives appear at once.

Massive Superweapons Raise the Stakes

No major Ace Combat campaign would be complete without enormous threats, and Wings of Theve continues that tradition.

The Republic of Sotoa is described as possessing large-scale superweapons capable of changing the course of battles. The official overview warns that players will need to outmaneuver and outthink these threats rather than relying solely on conventional dogfighting.

These encounters are designed to push the player beyond ordinary air-to-air engagements.

Instead of simply locking onto another fighter, players may have to identify weaknesses, manage their weapons carefully and coordinate with their squad while dealing with extremely powerful targets.

That focus on large-scale encounters is one of the ways Ace Combat 8 aims to make its campaign feel bigger than a sequence of conventional dogfights.

Ace Combat Online Expands the Series

The campaign is only part of the experience.

Ace Combat 8 introduces Ace Combat Online, which Bandai Namco describes as the largest online experience in the franchise to date. The online component includes an Air Base that functions as a social and matchmaking hub and can host up to 100 players.

Players enter online mode as customizable mercenary pilots. Their avatars can be changed as they unlock additional cosmetic rewards and equipment.

The online system also has its own progression and save data, separate from the main campaign. Cross-play allows players on supported platforms to compete alongside and against pilots using other systems.

Four Main Online Experiences

Ace Combat Online includes several different activities.

Co-Op Assault puts two teams of four players into cooperative missions where they complete objectives and compete for the highest score.

Co-Op Warfare adds a PvPvE structure. Two teams of four fight each other while computer-controlled land, air and naval forces create an additional threat on the battlefield.

There is also Scramble, which sends four players against a powerful rival AI squadron.

The most dramatic option may be Emergency Sortie. In these missions, eight players work together against enormous superweapon-class enemies, including threats connected to the series’ history.

Limited-time competitive events will also offer 4v4 team battles and eight-player deathmatches.

A Social Air Base Connects Players

The online Air Base is more than a matchmaking menu.

Players can use the virtual location to meet other pilots, communicate, prepare for missions and participate in training. The base also contains entertainment features, including classic Bandai Namco arcade games and a jukebox featuring music from earlier Ace Combat titles.

Players can earn in-game currency through missions and spend it on aircraft, cosmetics, boosts and other items.

The system also allows players to form squads with other pilots they meet online, creating a progression loop that extends beyond individual matches.

Ace Combat 8 Release Date and Platforms

The wait is almost over.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.

Deluxe Edition owners will receive early access beginning September 28. Digital pre-orders also include a copy of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War and an F-14A aircraft as launch bonuses.

The new 101 Overview trailer arrives just days before release, giving players a final look at the campaign, squadron mechanics, aircraft customization and online modes.

For longtime fans, the game represents the next major chapter in the mainline series. For newcomers, the overview provides a straightforward introduction to the systems they will need to understand before taking their first sortie.

With a cinematic campaign, dynamic skies, customizable aircraft, squad-based combat and an expanded online mode, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is preparing to bring the franchise back into the spotlight when it launches in October.
