Massive Sinkhole Swallows Road in Bangkok, Forces Evacuations Near Hospital
Bangkok, Thailand — A dramatic sinkhole opened up on a busy street in central Bangkok on Wednesday morning, tearing apart a major road and sparking evacuations near one of the capital’s key hospitals.
Though no injuries were reported, the incident caused significant disruption, with authorities blaming the collapse on underground train construction in the area. The sinkhole, estimated to be more than 160 feet deep, appeared along Samsen Road, directly in front of the Samsen Police Station and within close proximity to Vajira Hospital.

Vehicles Damaged, Infrastructure Crippled
Three vehicles were damaged in the collapse, including a pickup truck that was seen teetering dangerously on the edge of the crater before being lifted out by emergency crews using a crane.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that no casualties occurred but noted the damage to public infrastructure was substantial. Several utility poles were dragged into the hole as the ground gave way, snapping electricity lines and rupturing water pipes.
“The area experienced a structural failure likely linked to underground rail work beneath the surface,” Chadchart told reporters at the scene. “We’re focusing all efforts on stabilizing the area and preventing further collapse, especially with more rain expected.”
Emergency Response and Precautionary Measures
City authorities responded quickly to the incident. Electricity and water supplies were cut in the affected area as a safety measure, and residents in nearby buildings were evacuated. The Samsen Police Station was cleared, and Vajira Hospital — one of the city’s central medical facilities — announced the temporary closure of its outpatient services for at least two days.
While Bangkok officials confirmed the hospital’s building structure remained intact, they urged caution due to the risk of further subsidence, especially with heavy rainfall forecasted as part of the ongoing monsoon season.

Eyewitnesses Describe Shock and Panic
Residents in the vicinity described waking up to loud noises and vibrations just before the ground gave way.
“It was like an electricity pole collapsing — a deep rumbling, and then everything shook,” said Noppadech Pitpeng, a 27-year-old hospital worker who lives nearby. “I grabbed a few things and ran. I was scared the building would come down.”
Footage shared on social media shows the road slowly crumbling, vehicles reversing away as cracks appeared. Within minutes, a large section of the four-lane road had collapsed entirely, exposing the earth beneath and severing a vital transport artery.
Ongoing Investigation and Repair Efforts
As of Wednesday evening, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) engineers and disaster response teams were continuing their assessment of the site. Repair crews began laying down temporary barriers and drainage protections to prevent further erosion from the expected rainfall.
Chadchart said an official investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and to evaluate the construction firm involved in the nearby underground transit project.
“We are prioritizing public safety. If negligence is found, there will be accountability,” he added.
Bangkok’s Aging Infrastructure Under Scrutiny
This latest incident adds to concerns over Bangkok’s aging infrastructure, especially in areas undergoing rapid urban development. With large-scale underground transit expansions underway across the city, questions are being raised about oversight, soil stability, and emergency preparedness.
Thailand’s capital, home to over 10 million people, has long struggled with flooding, subsidence, and urban planning challenges. Incidents like this — while rare — serve as stark reminders of the city’s vulnerabilities.
