⚽ Rasmus Højlund’s Dream Night: Brace Seals Napoli’s First Champions League Win of the Season

October 2, 2025

Naples, Italy – On-loan Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund called it “a night you dream of” after scoring twice — including a late winner — to hand Napoli a vital 2-1 victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old Danish international, who arrived at Napoli on loan in early September, delivered a match-winning performance at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, scoring both goals in a pulsating group stage encounter. The result marks Napoli’s first Champions League win of the 2025-26 campaign, following a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in their opener.

De Bruyne–Højlund Link-Up Sparks Napoli Revival

Højlund’s heroics were powered by the brilliance of another new face in Naples — Kevin De Bruyne, who assisted both goals in a vintage midfield display. The Belgian playmaker, who joined Napoli on a free transfer this summer, set up the opener with a perfectly weighted through ball, which Højlund finished clinically past Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva.

After Colombian striker Luis Suárez equalized from the penalty spot for Sporting, it was again De Bruyne who provided the decisive delivery — a pinpoint cross from the left in the 79th minute that Højlund met with a fearless header to seal the win.

“It was the night you dream of, playing in the Champions League,” Højlund told UEFA post-match. “I celebrated touching the Napoli badge because I’m happy to play here — and the Champions League badge because I love to score in Europe.”

A Fresh Start in Naples

After a difficult 2024-25 campaign at Manchester United, where he scored just four goals in the Premier League, Højlund appears rejuvenated in Serie A. He has now scored three goals in five appearances for Napoli and is quickly becoming a fan favorite.

His arrival in Naples came after failing to feature in United’s opening four matches of the current season. Napoli secured the striker on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy for £38 million — contingent on conditions such as Champions League qualification.

Despite his mixed record at United — five Champions League goals, all in group-stage losses — Højlund has wasted no time in rewriting the narrative.

“Rasmus has a lot of quality. As a striker, when you go forward, you need that smell of goals,” said De Bruyne. “It’s a great night for him — and it’s going to help us get more goals with him.”

Kevin De Bruyne Ends Assist Drought in Style

For De Bruyne, the performance was more than just two assists — it was a return to form. The 34-year-old ended an eight-match drought in the Champions League without a goal contribution and joined elite company by registering two assists in a Champions League match for the fifth time in his career.

Only Angel Di Maria (8), Ryan Giggs (7), David Beckham (7), Lionel Messi (5), and Zinedine Zidane (5) have matched or exceeded that feat.

“Playing with an exceptional talent like Kevin De Bruyne is special,” Højlund said. “I just need to get into space, and he’ll get me the ball.”

Sporting CP Fall Short After Bright Start

Sporting, who began their European campaign with a 4-1 win over Kazakh side Kairat, couldn’t replicate their form in Naples. Despite equalizing through a penalty after Matteo Politano fouled Maximiliano Araujo, they struggled to contain the late surge from the hosts.

The defeat leaves both Napoli and Sporting with three points from two matches, setting up a tense battle for qualification in the remaining group fixtures.
